Chatfield Virtual Novice Open
General information This is a High School tournament in Colorado. View manager contact information The Colorado Novice Asynch-orama Oct 21, 2025–Oct 23, 2025
Here’s a totally asynchronous speech tournament all novice, but especially for those students who may not be able to compete on Saturdays (and are not doing debate).
Events: Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Program Oral Interp, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Mixed Extemp**, **Extemp will be emailed a choice of many topics on Oct. 20. Students should create the speech and record with the coach present. This is on the honor system. Coaches should try to monitor and limit the 30 minute prep time. Please remember that this is to give kids an opportunity to get some feedback, not to win.
Registration: You may register on tabroom.com starting Sept 5, until Oct 19. All entries must be uploaded to tabroom. Please no double entry.
Competition: All competition will be asynchronous and for novice competitors only. I leave it up to the coach’s discretion as to what a novice is. Coaches must upload one (1) video of an entry’s performance to be used for all rounds of competition.
Judging: Teams are encouraged to enter as many judges as possible. They can be students or adults who know what it means to be a novice. I trust your discretion. The plan is to have people begin judging on Tuesday, Oct 21 and should submit their ballot by Oct 23 at 7:00 PM. While there will be at least three rounds, the total number of rounds will depend on the number of judges. If we can get five, we will do it. In theory, all judges will get one section to judge. Therefore, if we have 1,000 judges, we will create enough sections for those judges, and your kids may get critiques from more than three judges.
Videos: All submitted videos should only be used for this tournament. A statement before the speech starts stating, “This is for the Colorado Novice Asynch-orama” is suggested. They should all be single takes with no edits. Duo must be recorded with both competitors together.
Awards: An awards presentation will be filmed and available for teams to watch at their leisure. No physical awards will be given.
Fees: The fees are going to be minimal in order to cover the cost of using tabroom.com. I am not looking to make money, just give kids a chance to get some feedback. Each entry will be $4. If you are a new program and money is tight, let me know. Just be sure to put in judges as well.
Important dates: Sept 5–Registration Opens Oct 19–Registration Closes Oct 20, 3:00–all videos must be uploaded Oct 21-23–judges will be given their assignment, and should watch and judge the round Oct 23, 7:00–Deadline for judges to submit their ballot Oct 25–Awards video will be released
