Dear Coach and Speakers,

Welcome to the BEN DAVIS GIANT SPEAKERS Invitational Speech Tournament on January 4th, 2020.  The meet will be held at Ben Davis High School located at 1200 N Girls School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214. 

 

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING

Please park in the front of the building.  Buses please use the bus lot. Please use Door 1.  For safety reasons, all doors will be closed at all times throughout the day.  Please enter and exit through Door 1.

 

BUILDING RULES

Because of the new reality we exist in, we are taking several new precautions in order to continue to provide a safe space for our students to compete.  So, we ask that all schools please respect the following:

  • No smoking or vaping is allowed on school property.  

  • For safety precautions, we are prohibiting schools from bringing in crockpots and such into our building.  Please do not bring them because you will be asked to take them out of the building.

  • Do not leave any door in the building open.  Everyone is to enter and leave via door 1.

 

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

All Registration will be done on www.speechwire.com. No emails, faxes or paper entries will be accepted. We strongly encourage that entries be made as early as possible (like right now, so you don’t forget) 

Registration will be locked (meaning no adding of entries can be added) on Wednesday, December 18th, 2019 at 5:00 PM.  Coaches will be able to make name changes and such until Thursday, January 2nd, 2020.  Registration on the day of the tournament will start at 7:00 AM and run until 8:00 AM.  There will be a judges meeting at 7:45 AM.  Extemp Prep will start at 8:00 AM. - updated 12/4/2019

 

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

This will be a varsity only tournament with four straight rounds of competition for debate and 5 rounds  with breaks for speech.  

 

The debate tournament will run with four straight rounds and the following:

  • We will not spin round one until all drops are entered.  We want to avoid as many byes as possible.

  • Only Public Forum will flip all day for sides.  All other events, debaters must speak pro or con twice. A bye will count as speaking either affirmative or negative if that happens.

  • Rounds will be power-matched after round 1 - high vs high - so the competition should get tougher throughout the day.  Because of this, we will push judges to turn ballots in as soon as possible after the round

  • LD and PF will be double flighted

 

The speech tournament will have the following:

  • For events with 36 entries or more, we will have the following structure:

    • 2 Preliminary rounds with 1 judge. 

    • Quarterfinal round - top 24 (in order to break, you must be in the top half)

    • Semifinal Round - Top 12 (in order to break, you must be in the top half)

    • Final Round

  • For events with 35 entries or less, we will have the following structure

    • 3 preliminary rounds

    • Semifinal round  (in order to break, you must be in the top half) top 12

    • Final round

  • Speaker Points

    • We will assign speaker points for each student, no ties, range is 100 to 80.  Speaker points will be the only tie-breaker used through-out the speech tournament for elimination rounds. In the Final round, we will use Judges Preference as the tie breaker.

Entry Per Team: 60 (40 Speech Entries Only, 20 debate entries - Please honor the allocation of entries.)

Event Entry Limitation: None. (However, the tournament may limit the # of entries for the overall event) 

Non-Sweeps Team Allowed: NO

Pickup Drops Allowed: NO

Additional Teams Allowed: NO

 

*An event may be capped.  So enter quickly.

 

TOURNAMENT RULES:

We will follow the rules established for IHFSA with the following exceptions:

  • Discussion is limited to 30 minutes only. Students in discussion may not double in Extemp.

  • Extemp will alternate between United States and International topics by round - please see the schedule below with the area of interest.

  • Dramatic Performance will be offered instead of Drama and HI separately.  We are combining the two events. Students may enter one HI or a DI in this event.  *Note for judge - you judge it the event the same way you judge duo.

  • DUO - Here are the rules:

    • Both duo partners may double using the same duo partner or a different one in a scripted, memorized,and op duos.   

    • A duo team that has the same partners may only have one scripted and one memorized duo. 

    • A student in Original performance can only have one OP duo.

    • Duos cannot compete using the same piece in more than one type of duo.  

    • Please identify what type of duo the student is performing in if he or she is doubling in this event with the same partner.  Also, please indicate the piece as well. Please identify the team as scripted (SCPT) or memorized (MEM). Please see example below. 

      • Example:

John Doe (SCPT) and Susie Doe (SCPT)

John Doe (MEM) and Susie Doe (MEM)

  • CAUTION: Students may compete against themselves in a round.  The office will not adjust the schedule for this occurrence.  Students performing the wrong piece under the wrong number will be disqualified if caught.  So, this is a risk you take.

  • Students may enter up to 4 events at their own risk – no more than two events per flight

  • CAUTION:  After the first round is completed, any student missing a round will be ranked last by the office. We will not re-run any round due to student OR judge error. 

  • Extempers may double in any FLIGHT B or C event at their own risk.  Extempers may not double in discussion.

DISCUSSION  

We will be using the following rules:

  • using the Socratic Seminar format.  

  • Artifacts will be posted on the Speechwire for download on December 16th, 2019. 

  • Electronic devices will not be allowed to be used or displayed in the round.  Students who bring electronic devices to the round will be instructed to place those devices on a table away from the competition until the round is over.  

  • ALL DISCUSSION ROUNDS WILL BE 30 MINUTES LONG.

  • The judge will bring the topic questions to the round.  Students will discuss the topic that the judge states is to be used in that round.  Any deviation from that topic will result in a last pace score for every student in the round.


 

EXTEMP

Extemp will draw each round. The topic areas are as follows:

 

ROUND ONE: World Leaders 

ROUND TWO: US Trade and Aid Policies

ROUND THREE: Science and Technology

ROUND FOUR: International Hot Spots

FINAL ROUND:  2020 Democratic Presidential Candidates

 

RADIO

We will do following:

  • Follow the Indiana radio format.  

  • The radio prompts will be available on December 16th, 2019 after 5:00 pm. 

  • Radio students can quadruple.  Radio contestants must go to radio first.

  • Radio students may not use any prepared outlines in On The Spot.

 

DEBATE TOPICS:

Lincoln Douglas - Resolved: States ought to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. - changed Dec 1, 2020

Public Forum - Resolved: The United States should end its economic sanctions against Venezuela. - changed Dec 1, 2020

World Schools Debate - Topic to be released

Policy Debate - Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.

Congress Bills -  IHSFA #6, 9, 14, 10, and 12

 

BALLOT RETURN 

All judges should return their signed and properly scored ballots and completed critique sheets at the end of each round to the ballot table located outside of the library.  Judges are expected to stay for the entire meet.

 

CONCESSIONS

There should be no one leaving the building as food for students will be served in the cafeteria. Complimentary food for judges, coaches and bus drivers will be provided.

 

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS

SPEECH

Each school MUST bring one judge for every 5 entries and every fraction thereof. 

 

DEBATE

Each school MUST bring one judge for every 4 entries and every fraction thereof. 

 

NOTE: Teams that do not bring enough judges, will disqualify their individual team members from IE sweepstakes placement.  Unless prior noted and approved before round 1 of the tournament. (Things happen.)

 

AWARDS

Our tournament is dedicated toward the individual achievement so team sweepstakes trophies will not be given.  We will acknowledge the Top 5 schools i.e. a shout-out from the podium. 

 

So, who gets trophies?  The kids. We will be awarding medals to the top 5 individual contestants with the most number of points (An incentive to double or even quadruple).  Tournament Event Champions will receive a ribbon and medal. The TOP 12 students (Semis and Finals) will receive ribbons.
