American Dream Debate Tournament SpeechWire Invitation General Information2025 AMERICAN DREAM DEBATE TOURNAMENTThis is a bilingual World Schools Debate tournament designed to challenge students’ global awareness, persuasive communication, and cross-cultural skills. Franklin Academy K–12 Tournament hours: 7:30 a.m. – 4:40 p.m. Eastern Time Lunch will be provided for students & judges. This event features World Schools Debate, a 3-on-3 format that emphasizes global perspectives, critical thinking, and accessible, conversational argumentation.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEWAt the 2025 American Dream Debate Tournament, students will debate in four rounds. Rounds 1–3: Students debate in their first language (L1) Round 4: Students debate in their second language (L2). Motion: This House believes Puerto Rico should become the 51st state.
3.1 ROUNDS 1–3Each team debates three rounds in their primary language (L1).A side (Proposition/agree or Opposition/against) will be randomly assigned for each round.
Teams must arrive prepared to debate both sides of the motion.
3.2 THE FINAL (4TH) ROUNDAll students will debate in their L2 (least comfortable language).Teams may be assigned either side of the motion for the final round.
4. USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES & INTERNETTeams may prepare with coaches and peers before the tournament, but may not receive outside help during a round.Electronic devices and Internet use are permitted during rounds.Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini) are prohibited. Teams found using AI will be disqualified.Printed materials (notes, dictionaries, world almanacs) are permitted.Phones may be used only to time speeches.
ELIGIBILITY & TEAM COMPOSITIONEach World Schools team must have 3–5 members, with three speakers debating per round.Teams of 4–5 may rotate speakers between rounds.Grades 8–12 are eligible to compete (no separate 8th-grade division, but teams may include students in 8-12 grade).Schools may enter an unlimited number of teams (as long as the judge obligation is met).Each team registers as L1 English or L1 SpanishL1 English teams: Rounds 1–3 in English; Round 4 in Spanish.L1 Spanish teams: Rounds 1–3 in Spanish; Round 4 in English
JUDGESEach school must provide one judge per World Schools team for the full tournament. Judges may speak English, Spanish, or both. Indicate the language proficiency of each judge through the registration in SpeechWire, and reach out to klindsay@floridadebate.org with any questions. Judges must view the resources and World Schools Guide in the American Dream Debate Canvas course. To be added to the Canvas course, email Kendall Lindsay at klindsay@floridadebate.org an email address not already associated with a Canvas account. Judges missing a round without a documented emergency will result in a $100.00 fee.
