Concord High School Debate and Novice Speech Tournament

 

The Concord High School Speech & Debate Team invites you to attend our 2025  Fall Debate and Novice Speech Tournament on Saturday, November 15.  Please read the information below.  

 

Online registration is available on Speechwire and should be open now.  If you have any questions please email me at jstutzman@concord.k12.in.us.  

 

PLEASE NOTE: E-balloting will be used. Please ensure your judges and students have speechwire accounts.

 

Registration

7:45-8:45 am (EST) in front of the Media Center

Judge Meeting:  8:45 am in the Media Center.

First Round

9:00 am (EST)

Awards

Approximately 4:00pm 

Debate Notes:

  • BQD, Policy, LD, PF, WSD, and Congress will be offered and will follow ISSDA rules.

  • BQD, Policy, LD, PF, and WSD will be power-matched rounds 3 & 4 as time allows.

Big Questions:
  • One Division will be offered.
  • Resolved: Moral systems rooted in theism are preferable to non-theistic moral systems.

Policy:

  • 2 divisions offered:  Varsity and Novice.  Novice is defined as a first year debater.  ISSDA rules apply.  

  • NSDA Novice Case Restrictions will be enforced.

  • Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly increase its exploration and/or development of the Arctic.

Lincoln-Douglas

  • Varsity and Novice offered.  

  • Both divisions will use the November/December topic. ISSDA Rules Apply.

  • Resolved: The United States ought to rewild substantial tracts of land.

Public Forum:

  • Varsity and  Novice offered.

  • Both Divisions will use the November/December  topic. ISSDA Rules Apply

  • Resolved: The United States federal government should require technology companies to provide lawful access to encrypted communications.

World Schools Debate:

  • One Division will be offered.

  • Rounds 1 & 2 will use this proposition: 

  • Rounds 3 & 4 will be impromptu. Teams may use 2 Reference books for prep.

Congress:

  • Varsity and Novice offered.  

  • Official Docket is available on speechwire.

  • Varsity and Novice will elect presiding officers from within the house with competitors voting for best P.O.  

DEBATE JUDGES:

  • Please bring one judge for every 2 entries or fraction thereof (E.G. 2 policy teams=1 judge; 3 LDers=2 judges; 3 PF teams=2 judges). 

  • Congress=1 judge per 5 entries/fraction.

  • All judges should be ready to judge any event.

  • Varsity debaters with 250 NFL points+ may judge novice (PLEASE make sure to mark them as such on their registration.)

  • We will be using online balloting, so all judges will need to register on Speechwire prior to coming and bring a device.  Laptops or tablets are preferred over smartphones. 

   

SPEECH NOTES:

  • Team entry is limited to 6 per event please. 

  • All ISSDA speech events will be offered in the novice division only.

  • Extemp will be combined.

  • Humor & Drama will be combined (Combined Interp).

  • Novice is defined as a student never having competed in high school speech prior to this season or who has fewer than 50 NFL points.

  • All ISSDA doubling rules apply. NO TRIPLING ALLOWED

    • Broadcasting doublers must go to Broadcasting before going to their 2nd event.

    • Extemp doublers must go to Extemp before going to their 2nd event.

  • All events will go 4 straight rounds

Broadcasting:

  • Rounds 1 & 4 will be a 5 minute newscast. Information on commercial and music copy will be available by Monday, November 10th after 3pm EST.

  • Round 2–Students should bring a 2-minute editorial on the topic of A.I. use in education.

  • Round 3-Breaking News

Discussion:

  • Artifacts will be uploaded to speechwire by Monday, November 10th after 3pm EST.

Extemp:

  • One division. Students will draw a U.S. topic for round 1 and an International topic for round 3.

  • Draw will be done electronically so students should have a device and active speechwire account.

SPEECH JUDGES:

  • Please bring 1 judge per 5 entries or fraction (So 6 entries=2 judges).

  • Varsity students with a minimum of 150 NFL points may judge.

 

 

General: Snacks and lunch will be available for purchase all day. As the cost of hosting increases, please discourage your students from using food delivery services. Any student caught ordering from food delivery services (except in cases of dietary restrictions) will be disqualified from the tournament. Any questions please contact me.

Awards: Ribbons to the top 6 in each event will be given.

 

Registration: Final registration with names for all divisions are due by 7pm EST Monday, November 10th.  Judges AND emails should be registered on speechwire by Thursday, November 13th. Due to room constraints, no extra entries will be accepted.
