Winter Wonder at CCHS

View manager contact information Winter Wonder 2024 November 10, 2024 Dear Speech and Debate Coach, You are cordially invited to the 31st Annual Winter Wonder Speech and Debate Tournament held at Cherry Creek High School on December 14, 2024. Events: We will be offering three rounds and finals in Drama, Humor, Poetry, Duo Interp, POI Program Oral Interpretation, National Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Improvisational Pairs, Varsity CX Debate, JV CX Debate, LD Debate, and Public Forum Debate. We will also offer Congressional Debate. Rules: · Each school (administration, teachers, and/or coaches) is responsible for ensuring they have proper parental permission for students to participate in an online tournament and to use the designated competition platforms. · A responsible coach must be available ON-SITE and VIA CELL at all times. · Competition is open to 9-12 grade students representing the school in which they are officially enrolled and doing so with the permission of their school administration and/or coaches. · We will use CHSAA rules in all events, except Congressional Debate. We will use NSDA rules in Congressional Debate. · We will use the NSDA cross-examination format in the final rounds of National and International Extemporaneous Speaking. · All competitors and judges must have a speechwire account to log in. o Ben at Speechwire has provided video resources to explain the creation of student accounts, judging online, viewing ballots and competing online. JV/Varsity CX Rules: · Varsity CX Debate is open to all debate teams. · JV CX Debate is limited to freshman and sophomore debaters or students in their first year of competition. · In JV CX Debate, no kritiks or counterplans are allowed. · In JV CX Debate, we will employ the NFHS Novice case limits, meaning that all teams should limit themselves to these case areas: o Patents: Emerging Technologies o Patents: Green Technology o Copyrights: Protect the Creative Arts o Trademarks: Trademark Trolls Debate Resolutions: We will use the 2024-25 NSDA CX topic (domestic intellectual property rights), the November-December NSDA LD topic (wealth tax), and the November-December NSDA PF topic (Taiwan). Entries: A maximum of four (4) entries will be allowed in each event, except Congress, which will be limited to ten (10) entries per school. Additional entries may be placed on the waitlist and we will accommodate those entries if space is available. Registration: All registration will occur at www.speechwire.com. Registration will close on Friday, December 6 or sooner, if the tournament fills. Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Fees and Payment: The entry fee will be $10.00 per student in events and $7.00 per student in Congress, based upon the pre-registration numbers on Friday, December 6. Changes in pre-registration will be reflected in the final entry fees if made via the web site by December 6. After that time, net increases in entries will result in increases in final entry fees, while net decreases in entries will not reduce your final entry fees. · Please make checks payable to CCHS Speech and Debate Team. Please review the attached document. Registration and Schedule: Check-in will be held from 7:00- 7:15am. All schools must check-in by 7:15am. Rounds will begin promptly at 8:00am. Awards are scheduled for 7:30pm. The final schedule will be determined by the number of entries in the tournament. If we are able to have awards earlier, we will do so. Awards: We will be awarding trophies or medals to all finalists. Additionally, numerous superior and excellent ribbons will be awarded. Team awards will be given to the top three schools. The host school is not eligible for team awards. Congressional Debate: The docket will be posted at www.speechwire.com. Judging: Each school is responsible for providing judges to cover their entries. Judges must be available for the three preliminary rounds and the final round. One judge must be provided for every two debaters or portion thereof. One judge must be provided for every 5 events/congress entries or portion thereof. Judges must be entered in Speechwire by Tuesday, December 10. Judges should bring a laptop or tablet to complete online ballots. Judges are responsible for checking for ballots at the appropriate times. Judge fees will be imposed for missing judges and for judges who miss ballots. Individuals who are found to have violated this policy will be subject to the full range of sanctions, up to and including removal from the tournament premises. 2024 Winter Wonder Topic Areas Congressional Debate The Congressional Debate Dockets have been posted at www.speechwire.com on the Files for Download tab. The Docket order is set for each session. · Congress will have three rounds or sessions and a Final round. · There will be a new PO for each session. · Precedence will start over for each session. A random precedence chart will be used for each session. · We will use direct questioning during the session. Extemporaneous Speaking Topic Areas We will use the NSDA cross-examination format with a 2-minute questioning period in the final rounds of National and International Extemporaneous Speaking. We will draw in 8-minute intervals during prelims and 12 minute intervals during finals. Round 1 – 1960s Song Lyrics Round 2 – Abraham Lincoln Quotes Round 3 – “It Happened in 1924” One Hundred Years Ago Finals – Wit and Wisdom of Bumper Stickers Improvisational Pairs Topic Areas Students will draw 3 topics and choose one. They will have 10 minutes to prepare a performance that is a maximum of 7 minutes with a 30-second grace period.
