Hello!

Riverside Junior High would like to extend a warm invitation to our 4thannual speech and debate invitational. This year’s tournament will be held on Saturday, February 29th, 2020.

Events & Rules:

We will offer all IHSFA Middle School Events, as well as Big Questions Debate (using BQ rules and timing).

Entries:

Each school is allowed up to 40 entries. We ask that each school have no more than 6 entries per offered event.

Students may double in all events except Radio/Broadcasting and Discussion.

Please have all student entries posted to SpeechWire by no later than 5:00 PM on Tuesday, February 25th, 2020. Please have judges entered by 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 27th, 2020. You may continue to drop students on SpeechWire until 5:00 AM on Saturday, February 29th. Any drops after that point should be communicated via text or phone to Brooke Shoopman (317-332-1054).

Judges:

Teams must have 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof. For example, if you have 26 entries, you will need 6 judges. When entering judges, please select a judge type (Speech or Debate). Any schools with debate entries must have at least one debate judge. Any schools that do not assign a judge type will have their judges assigned types at random.

Debate:

We will use the 2019-2020 resolution: “Resolved: Objective morality exists.”

The timing format will be as follows:

Affirmative Constructive – 5 minutes
Negative Constructive – 5 minutes
Question Segment – 3 minutes

Affirmative Rebuttal – 4 minutes
Negative Rebuttal – 4 minutes
Question Segment – 3 minutes

Affirmative Consolidation – 3 minutes
Negative Consolidation – 3 minutes

Affirmative Rationale – 3 minutes
Negative Rationale – 3 minutes

*3 minutes of prep time for both Aff. & Neg. to be used at the discretion of the competitors. *

Materials (such as pre-made evidence packets, format manuals, etc) can be found at https://www.speechanddebate.org/big-questions/. Judge primers are also available on the website but will also be made available on the day of the event.

If you have any entries in Debate, you must register at least one of your judges as a Debate judge.

Discussion:

As is now tradition, we will be using a modified Socratic method for our Discussion. This year, in light of the busy month of February, the provided sources will be heavily influenced by the existing Discussion questions. Students may use notes prepared for the Bloomington and Westfield meets, but should note that judges will also be looking for discussion related specifically to the materials below, as well.
