Dear Speech Coaches:

We would like to take this opportunity to extend to you and your team an invitation to the San Juan Showdown Speech Tournament to be held on Saturday, Feb. 1st, 2020.

We will offer two waves of events over the course of the day, and students may enter one Wave A event and one Wave B event.

WAVE A
Congressional Debate
Extemporaneous Speaking
Original Oratory
Interpretation of Dramatic Literature
Interpretation of Humorous Literature
Interpretation of Poetry

WAVE B
Public Forum Debate
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Duo Interpretation
POI
Informative Speaking

Students who have chosen congress here will compete in a chamber for three one-hour sessions throughout the day, which will run at the same time as the other events in Wave A.  The same judges will be utilized for each round of congress, and the nominations and voting will occur after the conclusion of the third round/hour.  A docket of legislation chosen from the NSDA website and individual team submissions will be e-mailed to schools by Monday, January 27th and this will be the legislation we will debate in both waves.  If teams have legislation submissions we ask that they be emailed to leigh.wagner@mcsd.org by Friday, January 24th for consideration.

Extemp will be combined, but students may choose topics from either the national or international envelopes.

Extemp Topics
Domestic: Politics, Economic Policy, Tech & Culture
International: Environment and Health, Global Economy, Global Leadership

The Public Forum Debate topic will be the February NSDA Topic (Economy)

The Lincoln Douglas Debate topic will be January/February NSDA Topic

Registration will be on speechwire.com, and fees will be $8.00 for individual events and $16.00 in team events.  No refunds will be given after fees are set at 4 p.m. on the Friday before the tournament.  Please bring cash or a check with you on the tournament day.

We are hoping for another great turnout of judges this year, and we are actively recruiting and training new judges in order to increase the Montrose pool .  We would like to make a strong appeal, though, for you to bring as many judges as you possibly can.  If you are traveling, we understand your limitations, but all judges are greatly appreciated.

Our team will be running a concession stand, so tell your students to bring a little cash.  Last year we did not sell much, as students walked to get food from the nearby restaurants, so please discuss staying on campus and supporting our concessions with your teams.  We will provide pizza and see how it goes, but last year we had Jimmy John's and a few other things that went to waste and I'd rather not have that happen again.

Families will be providing breakfast and lunch for judges and coaches.  Lunch will be a baked potato and chili bar.
