I hope you are having a wonderful school year! We were so thankful many of you joined us for our tournament last year and we are excited to welcome you back this February 8th for another wonderful Meet!
Westfield Middle School cordially invites you to the Westfield Middle School Speech Invitational on February 8th, 2018. This tournament is open to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The tournament will be conducted in compliance with the Indiana High School Forensic Association rules for Middle Schools (www.IHSFA.org).
Events of the Day: Declamation, Drama, Discussion, Extemp, Humor, Impromptu, Original Oratory, Poetry, Prose, Radio, Scripted Duo, Memorized Duo and Big Questions Debate
Registration: The registration for this event will be through Speechwire.com. All Entries must be made before Tuesday Feb 4th by 5:00 pm through Speechwire. All edits and drops must be made by 3:30 on Friday Feb 7th. The registration for this event is not yet currently open, but will be soon. You should receive an invitation from speechwire when it is open for registration.
Discussion: Do Schools prepare students for their future?
Round One: Do busy teen schedules create productive and effective future citizens? Are youth sports, activities and academics too intense?
Round Two: Do traditional grades ( A through F) help prepare students for their futures? Does this grading system create academic competition and does that competition help or hinder student learning? Should traditional grades be abolished?
Round Three: Is College essential to success? Are Career pathways becoming more attractive than traditional college pathways? Should college be free?
Impromptu Middle school format 8 minutes to prepare and deliver a speech. Round 1: A single WORD is the topic Round 2: The speaker is given a quotation Round 3: Is a current event question.
Radio: Radio Prep begins 30 minutes before the first round. Students should be in room W108 by 8:30 am. Round 1: 30 minute prep to write a 60 second commercial. Product fact sheet will be provided. Round 2: Editorial Cold Read: Each student gets 60 seconds to look at provided editorial Round 3: Newscast: Students must prepare and bring their own 2 minute newscast
Extemp: Extemp Prep begins 30 minutes before the first round. Students will meet in W 406. Extemp topics and articles will be selected the day of the meet. Students will have a 30 minute prep. They will only draw once. They may use one 4x6 note card during their speech.
Doubling: A student may not double in Discussion, Radio or Debate. All others they may double at their own risk.
Entry limits: 8 per event for a total of 50 entries per team. No student may enter more than 2 events.
Judging: 1 judge for every 6 entries or fraction thereof. Failure to bring judges will cause a team to be disqualified from sweepstakes.
Food: will be available to purchase in our cafeteria throughout the day. There will be a complimentary snack room for judges and coaches.

Official Rounds Round 1 9:00 am Round 2 10:15 am Round 3 11:30 am Awards 1:15 ? - West Gym
Visitors : May watch a round but must stay the entire length of the round, enter the round before it begins, identify themselves to the judge in the room, and no devices may be used for photos, recording, texting, etc. At the judge’s discretion a visitor must leave the round for inappropriate behavior.
Awards: Double ribbons will be awarded for the top 5 places per event. Trophies will be awarded to the top 5 teams.

Buses: Students may be dropped off at either the north or south entrance however we recommend the south entrance. Busses must park in the Bus lot on the East side of the building.
Registration Table: The Registration table will be located near the SOUTH entrance outside of the library. These are located between doors 12 and 13. This will also be where the judges must submit their critique sheets and rankings . Final registration for the tournament will be from 8:00 to 8:30am the morning of Feb 8th. Coaches must report all drops before 8:30 am.
Scores: Will be posted after Rounds 1 and 2 on the Windows on the South Side of the Cafeteria.
