Greetings Upstate Eight Coaches!

It is my pleasure to invite you to the Upstate Eight Conference Championship, hosted at Bartlett High School (701 West Schick Road in Bartlett) on Saturday, February 1, 2020. There are no fees for this tournament.

Please make your entries as soon as possible. You are limited to two entries per event. No competitor may be triple-entered.

All schools are required to bring three judges. (If you have more available, let me know.) I have been asked by my supervisor to note that your three judges must be paid by your school. The UEC pays for 15 judges hired by the host school.

Your judges MUST be “clean.” I am politely asking that any Speech alums you bring to judge are at least two Speech seasons removed from high school competition. Additionally, the judges you bring will most likely be judging your own kids. I will have copies of the rules book for your judges, along with samples of quality critiques.

Over the last two years, the UEC tournament followed a schedule with two preliminary, single-judged rounds, followed by triple-judged final rounds. Before that, we tried two preps, three preliminary rounds, and then finals. In the early 2000s, we followed a slightly different schedule…

7:00 a.m. – Registration

8:00 a.m. –Round 1 A (Double-Judged): DDA, HI, IMP, OC, OD, OO, PR

8:30 a.m.—RS Prep

8:45 a.m.—ES Prep

9:15 a.m.—Round 1B (Double-Judged): DI, ES, HDA, INF, PO, RS, SOS

10:30 a.m.—RS Prep

10:45 a.m.—ES Prep

11:15 a.m.—Round 2 (Single-Judged): All Events

12:45 p.m.—RS Prep for Finals

1:00 p.m.—ES Prep for Finals

1:30 p.m.—Finals

3:30 p.m.—Awards

This schedule is most-conducive to the space we have at available. Based on the estimated entry numbers you each emailed me in December, we could follow this schedule with ease. (With Regionals around the corner, having more critiques can help us all out in the long run.) However, as you finalize your numbers, if it turns out that this schedule would not be conducive, it will be changed. (If that happened, the tournament start-time, final rounds, and awards would be almost exactly the same. However, RS/ES prep for first round would take place earlier.) We will do our best to have awards as early as possible.

If you know how to run the RS/ES prep room, I am looking for assistance. That task is not in my realm of proficiency.

On the subject of concessions… Prepackaged items (snacks, water, soda) will be available. I am looking to “outsource” food service so that students have access to a proper lunch.

Please do your best to finalize your entries as soon as possible. You can text me drops/adds from your bus as you travel to the tournament (630-707-0006). I may leave registration open so that you can go on Speechwire and make those drops/adds on your own from the bus.

On the subject of busses: Please have your bus pull into the parking lot on Bartlett High School’s south side. Drop students off at the flagpole. From there, you’ll see the school’s entrance. When you enter, the cafeteria is to your immediate left. Your team will have its own table. When you enter, registration and the tab room will be to your right. Food for judges and coaches will be served in the teacher’s lounge, which is adjacent to the cafeteria.

The tournament has an interesting “theme.” (Why did I put the word “theme” in quotation marks? You’ll find out soon enough!)
