Greetings! Coaches Jason Newhouser and Michael Conley cordially invite you to participate in the Rossville Stinger Speech Tournament on Saturday, February 1, 2020!

Registration will only be accepted via SpeechWire. To ensure we have enough rooms and concessions, the deadline for registration is 12:00 PM, Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Please be sure to include your email address so that we can send you a confirmation. Please contact Jason Newhouser for any changes, including drops, after this deadline as soon as possible.

Our tournament will offer Broadcasting, Discussion, IX, USX, Impromptu, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Original Performance, Poetry, Prose, Program of Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, and the infamously fake event: Improvisational Duo.

Specific event information is as follows:
  • BROADCASTING: The two preliminary rounds will be the news program and the final rounds will be a 2-min prep/2-min perform on-the-spot. Program information will be made available through the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD link on SpeechWire on or before 6:00PM on Monday, January 27, 2020.

  • DISCUSSION: Each 30-minute round will be run as a Socratic Seminar featuring a different text for discussion. Texts will be made available through the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD link on SpeechWire on or before 6:00PM on Monday, January 27, 2020.

  • EXTEMP: Extemp will only draw prior to the first round and will use the same topic the whole day. If there are a small number of entries in the two extemp events, the events may be combined for more competition.

  • IMPROV DUO: Teams will be given a prompt and a TOTAL of FIVE MINUTES to prepare AND perform (i.e. 1-min prep, 4-min performance; 2-min prep, 3-min performance; etc.). Skits may include interaction between team members, including eye and physical contact. Props, however, may not be used. Improv Duo is referred to as a "fake" event above purely because it is just for fun. Please, have fun with this event!
Contestants may triple in ALL events. Please see the tournament structure information below for specific event stipulations and to better understand how this will work. There will be a special award for the triple-entered student who scores the best in their events. Contestants double and triple at their own risk! If a contestant is late (after the start time for the next round) to a second or third event - no matter the reason, even if not at the fault of the contestant - the contestant will be marked last in that round. Coaches, please explain this to your contestants and judges. Again, CONTESTANTS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE AT THEIR OWN RISK!

Tournament structure:

Even though we're a small school with limited space, I wanted to accommodate a larger-sized tournament. So, we're going to get creative! This tournament will be double-flighted with two preliminary rounds with two judges and a next-in and final round with three judges. The top 10 contestants in each event will advance to a next-in and final round. Team trophies will be given to the top 10 teams. Ribbons will be awarded to the top 10 finalists in each event.

Flight A (Broadcasting, Extemp, DI, DUO, Prose, O.O., Info)
Rd 1: 8AM (Extemp will draw at 8AM and speak at 8:30AM; multi-entered extempers MUST go to Extemp Prep FIRST)
Rd 2: 11AM

Flight B (Discussion, Impromptu, HI, Poetry, POI, O.P., Improv Duo)
Rd 1: 9:30AM (multi-entered dicussers should go to Discussion FIRST)
Rd 2: 12:30PM (multi-entered dicussers should go to Discussion FIRST)

Next-In/Final Rounds: 2PM

Awards: 3:30PM

Doublers can choose ANY two events; triplers MUST split their choices between the two flights (i.e. two events from Flight A, one event from Flight B, or vice versa). Encourage your students to double and triple as this will keep them busy the whole day! Single-entered contestants are only guaranteed to perform/present twice during the day (with LOTS of time between rounds!).

To make this work, we'll need lots of judges! Teams must provide AT LEAST one judge for every four entries or fraction thereof. For example, if you have 10 entries, you will need three judges. Any school failing to bring their assigned number of judges per their registration will not be eligible to earn a team trophy. If you can bring additional judges (even if they're not clean), please do so!

Concessions will be available from 7:00AM to awards. Please help support Stinger Speech by purchasing our concessions! Crockpots, coffee makers, large coolers, and cases of pop/water are not allowed. Coaches will be asked to leave those items on the bus.

Registration will begin at 7:00AM. Busses may drop students off at the main entrance on the east side of the school and can park in the adjacent lot. Additional parking will be available across the street (SR 26) in the church parking lot or on the west side of the building.

If you have any other questions, please contact us. Thank you and hope to see you at the tournament!
