Dear NIETOC family:

We deeply regret to inform you that the Executive Committee has voted to cancel our 2020 NIETOC event in Houston, TX.

The National Individual Events Tournament of Champions was founded on a mission of renewal for students and coaches, a focus that has driven every decision made by the organization. Based on the available information and projections concerning the potential spread of COVID-19, coupled with decisions that have been made by individual school districts, local and national educational organizations, state activities associations, and local/state governmental agencies, we feel this, although painful, is the best decision.

This is an unprecedented situation and because there is so much that we do not know about this virus, canceling the tournament is the safest option for everyone. It is the position of the NIETOC Board that our proactive decision will alleviate concerns about the tournament so that schools and students and families can focus on best practices in their respective communities to prevent the continuing spread of the virus.

We are pleased to announce that J. Frank Dobie HS and our tournament hotel have agreed to host us on May 7-9, 2021. Although we are heartbroken for the seniors who will lose out on this culminating activity, we would like you to know that all underclassmen who qualified this year via the automatic or bid-level options are already qualified for the 2021 tournament in the same event(s). More details about this will be made available at a later date.

Some logistical details:

  1. Fees. If any payments were made via PayPal, we will begin refunding those as quickly as possible. Any checks sent will be voided and an email will be sent verifying that this occurred.
  2. Hotel Rooms. If you have rooms reserved under our block at the Marriott Houston South, please contact our sales manager, Tia Harbour, via email (preferred) Tia.Harbour@atriumhospitality.com or via phone at 713-943-4022 with your confirmation # and/or the name under which the reservations were made. For all other hotel properties, the coach will need to individually cancel any reservations.
  3. Flights - Each airline will have a different policy but you may want to use a copy of this letter to make your case for a refund or credit for next year.

The NIETOC Executive Committee thanks you for understanding our need to cancel this year’s tournament and hopes for the healthiest outcome possible for all of our schools and students. We look forward to seeing you in Houston in 2021!

Sincerely, The NIETOC Executive Committee

Dear Coach:

We are proud to extend this invitation for you and your qualified students to participate in the 2020 National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. To see if you have qualified students, you will want to read the details found here:  http://nietoc.com/full-details/

The NIETOC is committed to bringing the nation's best and brightest students and teachers together to participate in a high-caliber and high-quality national speech tournament. This event will provide renewal for teachers with guided workshops, networking opportunities with programs nationwide, and strategies for increasing student achievement. The NIETOC is designed to give competitors an amazing competitive experience, with a student-centered schedule, competitive costs, and minimal judge requirements.

Students may enter three of the main events, as long as they are only doubled in a single flight. 1A (DUO, HI, OO, POI) 1B (DUET, DI, EXT, INFO) To confirm bid status, please check our website and the searchable bid recipient database:  http://nietoc.com/name-search/

Don’t forget that all 2019 NIETOC octofinalists and quarterfinalists in the main events earned one bid, as do any students who were state finalists in 2019. Semifinalists or finalists in the main events at the 2019 NIETOC, NSDA or NCFL tournaments are automatically qualified for our 2020 tournament. This is also true of any students who finish in the top three at this year’s state tournament in one of our main events.

Each school is provided the opportunity to bring two "bonus" Duet Acting entries, and may be eligible for one bonus entry in POI. For more information, please see our our handout entitled "2020 Bonus Entries" found under Files for Download.

ALL ENTRIES WILL INITIALLY BE ON THE WAITING LIST UNTIL VERIFICATION OF RESULTS IS CONFIRMED AND ACCEPTANCE IS GRANTED. Automatic and Bid applicants will be approved asap and At-Large entries will be approved between 3/26 and 4/1.

After completing online registration, please be sure to print all vital paperwork which can be found under the "Files for Download" button. Be sure to mail these forms with the appropriate payment by the registration deadlines.

If you have any questions, please go to www.nietoc.com or email us at info@nietoc.com. We look forward to hosting you at The 2020 Experience!
