TOC Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that we will not be holding The Tournament of Champions in Extemporaneous Speaking on May 1-3, 2020. New CDC guidelines recommend that for the next eight weeks (until May 17^th), events that consist of 50 or more people be cancelled or postponed. The students and alumni of Northwestern University were very excited to host the tournament, but in light of COVID-19’s threat, we do not wish to put our students, coaches, judges, and communities in danger.

The TOC committee is exploring avenues to recognize the achievements of those who have qualified to TOC-Extemp 2020. We plan to send certificates to all students who qualified recognizing their achievement and hope that this allows them at least some way to represent their hard work to future colleges or employers. We will send those out in the coming weeks.

We are open to the possibility of postponing the tournament to a later date, but we also understand that no-travel policies and other variables may limit the level of participation. While we considered the option of a virtual tournament, the committee has decided against this idea due accessibility and ethical reasons. This is a tournament that has always thrived on the community surrounding it, and we would love to hear your suggestions around how we can best celebrate the hard work your students have put in throughout the year.
