MLK Memorial MS Tournament

Dear Speech Coaches:
Cathedral High School cordially invites you to the Seventh/Eight annual MLK Middle School Speech Meet January 18, 2020. This tournament is open to sixth, seventh and eight grade students.
The tournament will be conducted in compliance with the Indiana High School Forensic Association rules for Middle Schools (www.IHSFA.org)
In addition we will be offering the MLK Event in honor of the oratorical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. See details below.
New this year we will also be offering the debate event Big Question.
Events of the Day: Big Question, Declamation, Drama, Discussion, Extemp, Humor, Impromptu, MLK, OO, Poetry, Prose, Radio, Scripted Duo and Memorized Duo.
Big Question We will use the Big Questions topic and format (see NSDA website for starter evidence packets, sample constructives, and a topic analysis). We will award plaques to the top debaters.
Discussion Topic: Teen Mental Health (cell phone ownership, social media, depression, anxiety)
Round 1 What factors affect vs effect teen mental health today, that did not exist when your grandparents were teens? (computers, cell phones, etc)
Round 2 Do we need to change society's views on mental health?
Round 3 Is bullying truly a mental health issue?
Extemp: Students in extemp may not double. Extemp topics will be selected the day of the meet. Students will have a 30 minute prep. They will only draw once.
They may use 1 4x6 note card during their speech.
Impromptu Middle school format 8 minutes to prepare and deliver a speech. Round 1 a WORD is the topic Round 2 the speaker is given a Quotation Round 3 is
a CURRENT EVENT QUESTION.
MLK event: This may be a scripted or memorized presentation, 5-10 minutes in length. A student may preform any sermon, speech or prose written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
They will need to attribute their selection as part of the presentation.
Radio: Students will bring a prepared 2 minute Newscast, Editorial will be supplied, Commercial material supplied to students who will have 30 minutes to prep a 1 min ad.
Doubling: A student may not double in Big Question,Discussion, Radio or Extemp. All others double at their own risk.
Entry limits: 5 per event for a total of 25 entries per team. No student may enter more than 2 events. Due to our building size we cannot allow non-sweep entries.
Judging: 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof. Failure to bring judges will cause a team to be disqualified from sweepstakes.
Teams with entries in Big Question must bring a debate judge.
All judges must be entered on SpeechWire as either a speech or debate judge
Food: will be available to purchase in our cafeteria throughout the day. Please support our concession stand it funds our meet expenses.
Registration: Deadline Tuesday January 15, 2020 at 6:00pm. Any entries received after that time will be refused. Please be aware our tournament may fill before the deadline, we are a small campus.

Round 1 8:30am
Round 2 10:00
Round 3 11:30
Awards 1:15 ? Auditorium
Visitors : May watch a round but must stay the entire length of the round, enter the round before it begins, identify themselves to the judge in the room, and no devices may be used for photos, recording, texting, etc. At the judge’s discretion a visitor must leave the round for inappropriate behavior.
Awards: Double ribbons will be awarded for the top 10 places per event. Trophies will be awarded to the top 10 teams.

Incase of BAD WEATHER coaches will be notified by email if we cancel. WE HAVE SCHEDULED A MAKE UP DAY JAN 20,2020. SAME SCHEDULE.
