Dear Speech Coach,

 

Moline High School invites you to join us in the later end of the season for our annual MHS Winter Tournament on January 25, 2020. We took a break from hosting while our performing arts departments got a facelift, but now we are excited to bring this tournament back from hiatus, so please come and partake in the festivities. We are continuing where we left off and invite your teams to helps us give the new auditorium a proper speech-centered house warming by having a tournament (complete with a hospitality room run by our wonderful drama booster parents!).  Hope to see you all on the 25th!

 

STRUCTURE: Two flighted preliminary rounds (one being double-judged), and varsity and novice finals.  Round 1A competition will begin at 8:30; Extemp and Radio are B events, so prep will begin at 9:00.  Please plan on arriving no later than 7:30 AM.

 

ENTRY:  A maximum of 3 entries per event. Please contact me if your team wishes to compete with more than that.  Please register online using SpeechWire.

 

JUDGES: Each team is expected to bring one qualified judge for every six entries.  If you wish to bring extra entries (numbers permitting), you will be asked to bring extra judges as well.  If you contact me quickly, hired judges may be available at a cost of $75 per judge.

 

FEES: 1 – 28 entries:         $100

      29 – 42 entries:        $150

EVENTS: All 14 IHSA events.

 

AWARDS: All individual finalists (varsity and novice) and the top 3 teams will receive recognition, along with a donation made to the charity of their choice.

 

REGISTRATION:   Begins at 7:00 AM.

 

EXT/IMP TOPICS: Each team should submit 5 Impromptu topics and 5 Extemp questions via SpeechWire.

 

ENTRY DEADLINE:         Wednesday, January 22, 2020 by 4:00PM

 

FINAL POSTING ON SPEECHWIRE: Friday, January 24 by 12:00 PM

 

RULES:     IHSA rules will apply, with the following notes:

 

Impromptu – Students will speak on a topic of their choice from a selection of three topics.  Students will be given 2 minutes to prep and a 6 minute speaking time limit.

Radio – Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.

Extemp – Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.

Time – Only in Radio as per IHSA rules.

 

SPECIAL DIRECTIONS: When driving on Avenue of the Cities, you'll notice an electronic marquis for MHS.  The high school is set back, down the driveway from the marquis.  Know that you will pass Roosevelt Elementary on your right (and possibly even the alternative high school/ROE if you are driving East on Avenue of the Cities).
