Please join the Summit High Speech and Debate team as we celebrate forensics and the festive season at our annual Summit Hilltopper Holiday Classic on Saturday,  December 14, 2019! 

 

  

EVENTS

We will be offering all of the 11 NJFL Speech Events: Dramatic, Humorous, Duo, Oral Interpretation, Program Oral Interpretation; Improvisational Acting, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, and Declamation.

 

 

We will offer Congressional Debate, two divisions of Public Forum Debate and one open division of Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

 

Students may double enter in any of the speech events, but may not double enter if competing in student congress or debate. 

 

There will be three preliminary rounds and one final round in all eleven of the speech events.  The final round of EXTEMP will include cross-examination.

 

DEBATE will have four rounds with no final round.

 

In Public Forum, students will be debating the December resolution.

 

CONGRESS will have two sessions.  Please email all BILLS by Fri, December 6.  We will upload the bills to SpeechWire by Sun, December 8.

 

ONLINE BALLOTS

We will be using electronic ballots this year. We will have paper ballots available for those who prefer, but all ranks must be entered online,

so every judge must:

 

COACHES-you must enter the emails for all of your judges when you register online.

 

JUDGE TRAINING

The main goal of the NJSDL is to provide a quality learning experience for all of our competitors and to help them grow as effective communicators.  At our fall coaches meeting we decided we could provide additional judge training at some of our fall tournaments to more effectively prepare our judges, especially for the State and District Tournaments. The Summit Hilltopper Holiday Classic will be offering JUDGE TRAINING for your new judges during ROUND 1. Experienced parent judges and SHS competitors will review all of the judging expectations and criteria for providing constructive feedback to our students. New judges will learn to fill out a ballot and write constructive comments. Following the training, the new judges will be assigned an experienced judge to shadow in ROUND 2 and ROUND 3. 

 

Please email ANNE POYNER with the names of any parents or new judges who would be interested in attending the JUDGE TRAINING. 

 

AWARDS

Awards will be given to the six finalists in each event, top non-advancing novice in each event, and sweepstakes trophies to the top three schools.

 

REGISTRATION

The deadline for entry is Wed, Dec 11 at 5:30pm EST. Registration will be done online at www.SpeechWire.com. Adds and drops can be made without penalty on the website until Fri, Dec 13, at 5:30pm EST. A nuisance charge of $10 will be made to any drops made after this time. Adds at registration will incur a $5 nuisance charge.   

 

FEES

Please present payment in the form of cash, check, or purchase order on the day of the tournament. 

 

Individual Speakers $10.00 per slot

Duo Teams and PF Teams $15.00  per team

Hired Judges: $85.00 per judge

 

Please make checks/purchase orders payable to: Summit High School.

 

One judge for every 5 speech contestants and/or one judge for every 3 PF debate teams.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be sold in the cafeteria.  Food will be provided to coaches and judges in the teacher's lounge adjacent to the student cafeteria.
