Purdue Boiler Bash & Illini Cornfield Clash

 

Dear Forensics Community,

 

On behalf of Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we cordially invite you to join us November 9 & 10 to the First Annual Purdue Boiler Bash and Illini Cornfield Clash. Day 1 will be hosted by Purdue University. Day 2 will be hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Both days will take place on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette, IN.

 

We will offer all 11 NFA events as well as the two Indiana State Experimental Events. We will hold semifinals for any event that surpasses 45 entries. Please see the invitation below for specific information about the tournament. If you have any questions, feel free to call or send us an email. Tournament Information Entries & Fees

 

Registration will be taken through Speechwire.

 

Competitors are allowed to enter up to 3 IE events per flight. To ensure the tournament runs efficiently, judges will not be asked to wait for competitors after the allotted time for the round, it is the competitors responsibility to make it to each of their rounds in the hour and fifteen minutes. Semifinals will be held for any IE event with 45 or more entries. Entries are due at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, November 5th. Drops will be taken until Wednesday, November 6 at 5:00 PM. Drop fees will be assessed after that.

 

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a student run team, so we are happy to talk about fee waivers for any student run team and first year teams for both halves of the swing.

 

Entry Fees

IE slots: $8.00

Uncovered IE slots: $10.00 in addition to the base cost

 

Drop Fees

IE slots dropped after the deadline: $10.00

IE slots dropped at registration: $15.00

IE judges dropped after the deadline: $25.00 plus the cost of hiring a judge

Judges

 

Each IE judge will cover 6 entries. Any judges dropped after the Wednesday 5pm deadline will be assessed a drop fee as listed above.

 

Rules

 

The tournament will be using NFA rules for IE. There will be limited Wifi access available for Extemp, but we cannot guarantee its reliability. Impromptu prompts will be given in the form of quotations, questions, ethical dilemmas, single words, objects, proverbs, or images. Prompts will be consistent across rounds.

 

Awards

 

IE awards will be given to all finalists in each event. The top non-advancing novice in each event will also be recognized. If there are more then 10 novice entries in an event, we will create a separate novice section. A novice for our tournament will be defined as anyone in their first year of collegiate speech.

 

Sweepstakes

 

Students competing in at least 4 IE events in at least 2 genres will be eligible for Individual Sweepstakes awards. The top 3 schools overall will receive Team Sweepstakes awards.

 

Big Ten Cumulative Sweepstakes

 

Since both UIUC and Purdue come from the Big 10 conference, since judging is so subjective, we will be offering a cumulative Big Ten Champion in each NFA event based on placements throughout the weekend. For example if student A places 5th in prose day 1 and 2nd day 2 they would have a cumulative rank of 7, and student B ranks 3rd day 1 and 3rd day 2 they would have a cumulative rank of 6, in this scenario Student B would be the Big Ten Swing Champion. This will only be offered for students competing at a Big Ten school, contingent on receiving the appropriate amount of Big Ten entries. We will also award a Big Ten swing team champion as well.

Parking

 

University Parking lots are free on campus throughout the weekend. There is a sizable parking garage across the street from Beering Hall where the tournament is located. The garage is on University St. in between 2nd and 3rd street.

 

Food

 

We will be operating out of Beering Hall on our campus. The Purdue Memorial Union building basement provides numerous restaurants and food options including Starbucks, Flatbread, La Salsa Mexican Grill, Okame Sushi, and more. Chauncey Mall, as well as multiple food options including Jimmy Johns, Chipotle, Qdoba, and Einstein are located further down State Street. We have also provided the name and number of several delivery options.

ICE Information (will be updated as information changes)

 

Our program is committed to inclusiveness and welcomes students and coaches from all identities and social roles. In light of ongoing harassment and discrimination, and the current administration's most recent action to repeal DACA, our programs stand in solidarity with, and will continue to offer a safe, educational space for our most vulnerable members. Purdue University and the University of Illinois has joined with 698 other Universities to show official support for DACA and to call for its continuation and expansion. Neither West Lafayette nor Lafayette have declared themselves sanctuary cities. Under Indiana state law, sanctuary cities are prohibited, and no government funded university is allowed to identify as a sanctuary campus. Last known ICE activity in Tippecanoe County was early July. However, West Lafayette government official have voiced their dissent of ICE activity and support students of all backgrounds.

 

Indiana State Experiment Event Descriptions

 

Radio: Contestants will be given a packet of source materials and will have 30 minutes to select and organize a 5-minute simulated radio broadcast. All material used in the broadcast must be provided by the tournament with the exception of any hypothetical station call letters, time and current weather conditions or forecast and no more than one commercial (maximum 30 seconds). Contestants should strive to present a broadcast that resembles a live radio news segment and refrain from humorous devices (like the traffic girl falling out of the traffic copter or Bigfoot rampaging through town, etc.). Maximum time limit for the speech is 5 minutes. Students will be seated at a table during the performance and may use a stopwatch since time signals will not be given. Judges will not face the contestant during the speech. Students will speak in listed order.

 

Public Narrative: Public narrative is the “why” of organizing—the art of translating values into action through stories. From stories we learn how to manage ourselves, how to face difficult choices, unfamiliar situations, and uncertain outcomes, because each of us is the protagonist in our own life story, facing everyday challenges, authoring our own choices, and learning from the outcomes. But stories not only teach us how to act – they inspire us to act. Stories communicate our values through the language of the heart, our emotions. And it is what we feel – our hopes, our cares, our obligations – not simply what we know that can inspire us with the courage to act. This performance requires the use of a manuscript and will be a personal story from the narrator. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes.
