TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

FORMAT:       There will be three preset rounds breaking to finals. Students may triple enter in all events, but we will not hold rounds for competitors.  No competitor may use the same script or parts of the same script in more than one event.

***ENTRIES ARE DUE BY 5:00pm ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2019.***

ENTRIES:       Please enter ONLINE at www.speechwire.com.  Click on the “Tournaments Calendar” button and select the “Pius X/Lincoln East Turkey Talk.” If you have questions about your varsity entry, e-mail Nolan DeWispelare (nolan.dewispelare@piusx.net).  If you have questions about your novice entry, email Nick Herink (nherink@lps.org).

LIMITS:           Understand your students may hit each other if sections are few and your entries are many.  We must be able to use your judges, so we may need to clear sections to make this possible.

DROP/ADD:   No adds will be allowed on the day of the tournament.

FEES:             Entry fees will be $8.00 per event.  Any entries not "covered" by your judges cost an additional $15.00 per entry.

REGARDLESS WHETHER YOU HAVE VARSITY ENTRIES OR NOT, PLEASE MAKE ALL CHECKS PAYABLE TO PIUS X.

JUDGES:       You must furnish one judge for every 5 entries or part thereof.  PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO PROVIDE JUDGES.  We were very tight on judges last year, and a shortage of judges threatens the efficiency of the tournament.  You may use non-competing varsity team members who you think will do a good job with the novices as judges in the East division only.

All judges must be available for finals.

AWARDS:      Team trophies through third place.  Combined sweeps trophy for Varsity + Novice.  All finalists in each event will receive awards.  Ribbons will be awarded to individuals ranking 1st & 2nd in each round.

SEPARATE NOVICE & VARSITY DIVISIONS OF THE FOLLOWING:

EXTEMPORANEOUS--Current events topics since August 2019.  Thirty-minute preparation, seven-minute maximum speaking time, no minimum limit.  One notecard is optional.

ORATORY--An original speech composed by the speaker intended to persuade, convince, or inspire.  Ten-minute maximum time limit.  Manuscript is optional.

INFORMATIVE--An original speech composed by the speaker intended to inform or explain.  Ten minutes maximum.  One 4 x 6 notecard optional.  Visual aids are allowed.

ENTERTAINMENT--An original speech composed by the speaker.  This is a public address event.  The purpose is to entertain, but the speech should have a serious point.  This is not original comedy, nor is it original humorous interp.  Eight minutes maximum time limit.  One 4 x 6 notecard optional.

HUMOROUS & DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION--These will be separate events in interpretation which may be taken from prose or drama.  Ten-minute maximum time limit.  Manuscripts are optional.

POETRY--A six-to-eight-minute presentation of poetry.  If more than one poem is used, the selections should be linked by a common theme or author.  Transitional statements between poems are optional.  Manuscripts are mandatory.

DUO INTERPRETATION--A ten-minute max. presentation of a cutting from a play. Manuscripts are optional.  This is NOT duet acting.

PROGRAM ORAL INTERP (POI) will be offered as a VARSITY EVENT ONLY at Pius X.  Any novices who wish to compete in POI will need to compete on the varsity side. The program is comprised of poetry, prose, and drama (at least 2 genres represented) around a central theme or idea.  Time limit is 10 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: We reserve the right to combine Public Address events (INF, ENT, & OO) and/or Interpretation events (HI & DI and possibly POE) in either division if entry numbers do not warrant separate events.  East and Pius X team members may compete and be eligible for individual awards, but neither host will compete for sweepstakes.  Finally, if there are seven or fewer entries in an event or division, no final round will be held.  The three preliminary rounds will be “cumed” to determine the placements.
