Greetings!

You are invited to Chesterton’s Skeffington Memorial Tournament on Saturday, November 2, 2019.
Registration will be on SpeechWire (www.speechwire.com).
We will offer all 14 IHSFA events.
You may enter as many students as you wish.
We will offer novice and varsity divisions.
We will have three rounds and a final in all events.
One judge covers 5 students.
We hope to hold awards by 3:00 pm, provided the tournament runs smoothly.

Doubling and Tripling

  1. You may triple enter up to four students
  2. Students in discussion may not double/triple enter
  3. Students in extemp may not double/triple in broadcasting and vice versa. This is because of overlapping prep periods.

Please bring one judge for every five entries (6 entries = 2 judges).  Judges will be asked to write clear, logical critiques for the students.  Students need to understand the reason for their rank.  We will not have timekeepers; judges should use stopwatches to time students.  If the judge does not have a stopwatch he/she should announce to all students that time will not be kept.  Please inform your judges of recent changes in IHSFA rules and newly added events.

Unless otherwise stated, we will default to IHSFA tournament rules for individual events.

Discussion: Artifacts will be posted in the "Files for download" section of Speechwire.

Extemp: Topic areas will be posted in the "Files for download" section of Speechwire. Questions will come from current events that occurred or were discussed in the media from September 1, 2019 through the present.

Broadcasting: Details for each round will be posted in the "Files for download" section of Speechwire.

First round:  News program (Material will be provided; be prepared to cut and paste your news story using the uncut stories provided) (5 min)
Second Round: Editorial (2 min)
Third Round: Cold Read (Untimed)
Fourth Round: On the Spot (2 min prep, 2 min speaking time)

Registration (Remember we are on Chicago Time):  Registration is on SpeechWire, and entries are due by Monday, October 28th, 2019 at 5:00 CST.  We will leave SpeechWire open for drops, name changes, and judges names (only) until Thursday, October 31st.   Drops, however, will not change your judging obligation based on your original entry.  Final registration will be from 7:00-7:45 a.m. on the 10th. Rounds and preps for all events will be posted at 7:50 and begin at 8:00. Round 1 of Extemp and Broadcasting will prep at 8:00 and speak at 8:30.

We will have food service in the cafeteria. Please remain in the building. If you have any questions contact Dakota at damccoy@duneland.k12.in.us

Important:  Please text any drops you have by 7:30 (CST) Saturday morning at 219-510-7504. There will not be any drops to pick up on the day of the tournament.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at CHS!
