Winter Wonder 2019

Dear Speech and Debate Coach:                                                                                         

You are cordially invited to participate in the 26th Annual Winter Wonder Speech and Debate Tournament on December 14, 2019.

On Friday, we will host a World Schools Debate competition, discussed in the WSD Invitation.

On Saturday, we will host the traditional  Winter Wonder Tournament with competition in 16 different events.

Schools and students may participate in the Friday WSD competition, or in the Saturday tournament, or in both events.

Events:  The following events will be offered: CX Debate, JV CX Debate, LD Debate, Public Forum Debate, National Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, Drama, Humor, Poetry, POI Program Oral Interpretation, Duo Interp, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Improvisational Pairs, and Congressional Debate. Three rounds and finals will be held in all events. 

Entries: A maximum of four (4) entries will be allowed in each event, except Congress, which will be limited to 10 entries per school. Additional entries can be placed on the waitlist and we will accommodate those entries if space is available.

Registration: All registration will occur at www.speechwire.com. Registration will close on Friday, December 6, or earlier if the tournament fills. Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.  As always, we would appreciate knowing of any drops in advance of the tournament, in order to help the scheduling of rounds. Please see the fees section for fee information.

Rules:

  • Competition is open to 9-12 grade students representing the school in which they are officially enrolled and doing so with the permission of their school administration and/or coaches.
  • We will use all current NSDA topics in each of the debates. We will use the 2019-20 NSDA CX topic (Arms Sales), the November- December NSDA LD topic, and the November-December NSDA PF topic
  • We will use the NSDA Cross-examination format in the final rounds of National and International Extemporaneous Speaking.
  • CHSAA rules and event descriptions will be used for CHSAA events. 
  • NSDA Congressional Debate rules will be used for Congressional Debate.
  • The rules for Improvisational Pairs and Impromptu are attached and posted at www.speechwire.com

Doubling Rules:

  • CX, JVCX, PF, and LD Debaters may not double-enter.
  • Congressional Debate students may not double-enter.
  • Students in events may double-enter in two events. Students are responsible for making it to their rounds. Students must pay attention to the schedule because we may not be using a full wave system- some events may occur in the same time period.
  • Students can only enter one Extemp event.
  • Extempers that double-enter risk losing part of their prep time.

JV/Varsity CX Rules:

  • Varsity CX Debate is open to all CX debate teams. 
  • JV CX debate is limited to freshman and sophomore CX debaters or students in their first year of competition. 
  • In JV CX, no Kritiks or counterplans are allowed.
  • In JV CX, we will employ the NFHS Novice case limits, meaning that all teams should limit themselves to these case areas:
    • Saudi Arabia
    • Small Arms and Light Weapons
    • Drone Exports
    • India

Fees and Payment: The entry fee will be $12.00 per student in events and $9.00 per student in Congress, based upon the pre-registration numbers on Wednesday, December 4. Changes in pre-registration will be reflected in the final entry fees if made via the web site by December 4. After that time, net increases in entries will result in increases in final entry fees, while net decreases in entries will not reduce your final entry fees. Judging:  Each school must provide at one judge who will be available to judge all day and available to judge all events entered by their school.  Please assist in hiring judges for the tournament. Judges are responsible for checking for ballots at the appropriate times.

Awards:  We will be awarding trophies to all finalists. Additionally, numerous superior and excellent ribbons will be awarded.

Final Registration:  Final registration will be from 7:00 to 7:30 AM, with rounds beginning at 8:00 AM. Please plan to arrive at registration early. Schools not registered by 7:30am may be dropped from the tournament. Awards are scheduled for 7:30pm.

Congressional Debate: Please submit bills and resolutions by Friday, November 15 at 3pm by email to mbenham@cherrycreekschools.org in PDF format or Word format. The docket will be available on www.speechwire.com on or before Monday, November 18.

Concessions:  A concessions stand will be available for students. Meals and snacks will be furnished for coaches and judges.

Site: The tournament is being held at CCHS, 9300 E. Union Avenue, Greenwood Village, 80111.  Registration will be in the lobby of the West building by the cafeteria.

Miscellaneous Details: A responsible coach must be present on site with students at all times.  Please understand that Cherry Creek Public Schools bans all use of tobacco by students and adults in or on all school grounds and facilities. Please remind students that mistreatment of facilities may result in the cancellation of future tournaments.

You are cordially invited to the Cherry Creek World Schools Debate Wonder at Cherry Creek High School on Friday, December 13, 2019.

On Friday, we will host a World Schools Debate competition.

On Saturday, we will host the traditional Winter Wonder Tournament with competition in 16 different events, discussed in the Winter Wonder Invitation.

Schools and students may participate in the Friday WSD competition, or in the Saturday tournament, or in both events.

WSD Event: We will be offering three rounds of World Schools Debate.

WSD Entries: A maximum of four (4) WSD team entries will be allowed from each school. Each WSD team entry will consist of three students. Additional entries may be placed on the waitlist and we will accommodate those entries if space is available.

WSD Rules:

  • Competition is open to 9-12 grade students representing the school in which they are officially enrolled and doing so with the permission of their school administration and coaches.
  • We will use NSDA World Schools Debate rules and the NSDA World Schools Debate ballot.
  • Rounds 1 and 3 will use the following Prepared Motion for debate with each team scheduled to debate both the Proposition and Opposition sides:
    • This House would prohibit drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
  • No internet is allowed during the debate rounds.
  • Round 2 will use an Impromptu Motion, announced to all teams one hour before the scheduled round. All teams will take a dinner break (pizza is provided) and prepare in the IC Lounge. Each team is allowed to consult an almanac and dictionary per NSDA rules. No other outside sources, including the internet, will be used during Round 2 or the prep of Round 2.

WSD Registration: All registration will occur at www.speechwire.com. Please register for WSD in the Cherry Creek Winter Wonder website on speechwire. Registration will close on Friday, December 6, or earlier if the tournament fills. Registrations are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

WSD Final Registration and Schedule: Final registration for WSD will be between 3:30 and 4:00pm on Friday.

Round 1 (Prepared Motion)—4:15pm-5:15pm

Round 2 (Impromptu Motion)—5:20pm-6:20pm (preparation and dinner break); 6:20-7:20pm (debate)

Round 3 (Prepared Motion)—7:25pm-8:25pm

Schools should plan to arrive at WSD registration early. Schools not registered by 4:00pm may be dropped from the tournament. Awards are scheduled for 8:45pm.

WSD Awards: We will be awarding ribbons, medals, and/or trophies to some of the top students.

WSD Judging:  For every two WSD teams or portion thereof, you must provide one judge who will be available to judge all three rounds. Food and light snacks will be provided to all judges and coaches during the Round 2 Impromptu Motion preparation.

WSD Dinner & Snacks:  Pizza and drinks will be provided to all competitors during the impromptu round preparation period.

Site:  The tournament is being held Cherry Creek HS, 9300 E. Union Avenue, Greenwood Village, CO 80111. World Schools Debate Check-in will be in the IC Building.
