Hello Speech Coaches!

The Thornton Township High School Speech Team is pleased to invite you to the 35th Annual Thornton “Turkey” Tournament to be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019.  We are looking forward to a great day and are excited to run an efficient and organized tournament just as we have in the past.

Preliminary information regarding the tournament is listed below.   The tournament will include three preliminary rounds and a final round.  Please indicate your interest by completing SpeechWire's registration by Friday, October 25th.

We look forward to seeing your team at Thornton this year.  Please keep in mind teams that host a tournament will be allowed to enter four in each event. Please do not ask for extra entries because we are limited on space.  If you should have any questions, feel free to call or email Brad Ablin at ablin.bradley@district205.net or 708-269-9036 or Marie Wojdelski at wojdelski.marie@district205.net or 708-225-4129 or 708-705-0571.

Sincerely,

Brad Ablin, Marie Wojdelski, and the Thornton Coaching Staff

35th Annual Thornton “Turkey” Tournament Information

Contest Rules

The Thornton “Turkey” Tournament will follow I.H.S.A. rules for all individual events with the following exceptions:

Extemporaneous Speaking: Contestants will have one 30-minute prep period. That speech will be used for both preliminary rounds. Contestants will be double-judged in the first round and single judged in the second round. Finalists will prep for a second time.

Radio Speaking: Contestants will have one 45-minute prep period. That script will be used for both preliminary rounds. Contestants will be single judged in the first round and double judged in the second round.  Finalists will prep for a second time.

Team Entry: Each team may enter two contestants per event, unless you are hosting a tournament in which teams may enter up to 4 per event.  Students may be single or double entered only.

Team scoring: Preliminary round scoring will determine team placement. The top two scoring contestants in each event will count toward your total team point tabulation.

Awards: The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Individuals medals will be awarded to all finalists. Team trophies and turkeys will be awarded to the top five schools.

Concessions: Concessions will be open throughout the day in the cafeteria.  There are some limited fast food options near the school.

Judging: Each team will need to provide the following number of judges based on individual entries:

1 – 6 Entries:            1 judge

7 – 12 Entries:        2 judges

13 – 18 Entries:       3 judges

19 – 24 Entries:       4 judges

25 – 30 Entries:       5 judges

31 – 36 Entries:       6 judges

37 – 42 Entries:       7 judges

43 – 48 Entries:       8 judges

Each team will be responsible for the number of judges based on your original entry number. Teams that are missing judges will be charged $100.00 per judge.  Contestant drops on tournament day will not decrease your number of required judging assignments. Also, to assure proper coverage, please advise all hired judges that they must stay the entire day regardless of how many contestants if any from your team qualifies for the Final Round.

*Please supply your judges with stopwatches for Impromptu Speaking.
