Dear Coach,

It’s that time again! The Thirteenth Annual Pinecrest Open Speech and Debate Tournament will be held Saturday, September 28th at Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines. We are hopeful hurricanes will stay away; so, plan now to join us on the Pinecrest campus for a well-run day of competition.

Competition will be offered in Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Congress, Humorous Interp, Dramatic Interp, Duo Interp, Oral Interp (CFL rules), Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Informative Speaking, Program of Oral Interpretation, Declamation, and Original Oratory. Competition will be offered in Varsity and Novice categories in Congress, Public Forum and Lincoln Douglas debate. For us to split speech events into Novice and Varsity categories, we will need at least eight entires registered in each division.

Public Forum Debate will use the September/October topic, Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative.
Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate will use the September/October topic, Resolved: In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions.
Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate will use the Novice topic, Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.

Congressional Debate will accept student submitted legislation up through September 13th.  Email submissions in PDF format to carter.libby@gmail.com.  After September 15th, the docket will be supplemented with legislation taken from this past June's NSDA National Tournament. We anticipate having the full docket posted no later than September 16th.

Novice speech competitors will not be penalized for using their scripts.

Registration will take place from 8:00-8:30am in the media center at PHS. Please make checks to Pinecrest Forensics Boosters.
Our team parents are busy planning for extensive refreshments in our student concession stand, and for this reason, we ask that you please NOT bring outside food/drinks onto campus.

We welcome you and your team!  Please join us on the 28th!
All the best,

Ben Denton, Head Coach
