Hello MAFL Friends!

I hope you will join us for MAFL #3 and MAFL #4 hosted on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27, 2019. Many thanks in advance to Kevin Hill, Brian Schanen, and UW-Whitewater Forensics for their hospitality.

Special Notes for MAFL #4:

  • MAFL Internship applications are due Tuesday, October 22 by 5:00 pm CDT. Check the MAFL website (www.mafl.info) for the full internship description.

The Mid-America Forensic League is committed to inclusiveness and welcomes students and coaches from all identities and social roles. In light of ongoing harassment and discrimination, MAFL stands in solidarity with and will continue to offer a safe, educational space for our most vulnerable members. In this spirit, if you (students, coaches, or judges) encounter any issues that impede your ability to be mentally and physically well at the tournament, please seek out the MAFL Wellness Advocate. The MAFL Vice President Megan Koch is serving as the 2019-2020 MAFL Wellness Advocate.

Entries: Each school may enter 6 students per event. Each student may enter up to 4 events. Because of the 1 hour and 15-minute time limit for each round, it is strongly recommended that students are only double-entered and not triple-entered in a pattern. It is the responsibility of the student to make it to their rounds on time. Judges cannot wait past the time allotted for the round. Students may not enter all 4 events in one pattern.

*Entries are due Tuesday, October 22 by 5:00 pm CDT. After this point, no new entries will be accepted, however, changes and drops may be made on the SpeechWire website until Wednesday, September 24 at 12:00 pm.*

Fees: Please remember that at the first MAFL you attend, you will be required to submit your yearly membership dues of $300.00. This payment entitles your school to attend all of the remaining 2016-17 MAFLs. A non-member school may attend 1 MAFL weekend per season without paying membership dues, but instead, pay $8 per entered slot and uncovered judge fees.

Beyond your one-time membership dues, the only fees you will pay at each tournament are for uncovered or dropped slots. Each full-time judge covers 6 slots, and uncovered slots are $10 each. If you bring more than 20 uncovered slots, the fee will be increased to $20 for each slot beyond 20.

*All fees will be assessed on Wednesday, October 23 at 12:00 pm. After this point there will be a $10 charge for each dropped slot.*

Please do not hesitate to contact me (lisaroth@uwm.edu or 309-264-0933) if you have any questions about MAFL tournaments or using SpeechWire.

Best,

Lisa Roth

MAFL Tournament Director

PARKING/DIRECTIONS

Campus Maphttps://www.uww.edu/campus-info/map-and-directions/campus

GPS-able Address: Competition building (Hyland Hall): 809 W Starin Rd, Whitewater, WI 53190

Parking Advice

o   Lot 7 (Recommended) - 830 W Starin Rd, Whitewater, WI 53190

o   Entering “UW-Whitewater Lot 7” into Google Maps will take you straight there as well

o   While this is the closest parking lot, parking is free on our campus on weekends, so teams are free to park in any open parking lot

FOOD OPTIONS

o   There are no off-campus restaurants within a brief walking distance of Hyland Hall, however, several fast food options are within a short driving distance of about one mile (McDonalds, Qdoba, Jimmy Johns, Rocky's, Culvers, Taco Bell, and Subway). Also, Jimmy John’s will deliver to campus. Jimmy Johns: 262-473-6100

o   On-campus, Fire is open in the lower level of the university center. This dining option offers a casual grill serving classics like burgers, fries, pizza, etc. Not always the fastest, but it’s a short walk from Hyland Hall. It opens at 11:00 am.
