SFCFL 1: West Broward High School | October 12, 2019

The Speech and Debate team from West Broward High School invites you to the 1st SFCFL tournament on Saturday, October 12, 2019.   Remember, you must be a paid member of SFCFL to attend this tournament; however, you may bring your membership information and fees the day of the tournament.  Additionally, any student who wishes to compete at the Grand Final Tournament in March must attend one complete SFCFL tournament. SFCFL COMMUNITY SERVICE: For SFCFL 1 at West Broward we are proud to be partnering with Broward Breast Cancer Association. We will help raise funds throughout the tournament and also will offer the traditional pink ribbon awards for the champions.

EVENTS: Novice & Varsity Public Forum, Novice & Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate, Varsity & Novice Congress, Novice & Varsity Team Debate (Policy), Program Oral Interpretation, Mixed Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Duo Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Performance, Declamation, Informative Speaking

ENTRY LIMIT:     6 entries in each category. DOUBLE ENTRY IS ALLOWED IN SPEECH EVENTS.

STUDENT ENTRY FEE:   $18.00 per student –includes lunch - payable to SFCFL.

JUDGE REQUIREMENTS:      1 judge for every 5 IE (including Congress), and 1 judge for every 2 debaters or fraction thereof, but you cannot mix TD, PFD, or LD judges. Please make certain you have the correct number of debate judge. Schools with more than 35 IE competitors will need only 7 IE judges.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:    Enter online at   www.speechwire.comEntries will be accepted through Tuesday October 8, 2019.  Changes and drops may be made until Friday, October 11, 2019 at 8:00 a.m., but you will be charged the entry fee for any student originally entered.  The web site will be closed Tuesday night. Drops after Tuesday night and before Friday at 8:00 a.m. will be charged the entry fee.  After 8:00 a.m. on Friday, drops will incur $10.00 in addition to the entry fee.   Please e-mail me any changes/drops, judge names after Wednesday evening.  Drops on the day of tournament or “discovered” during the actual tournament will result in the entry fee forfeiture plus a $20.00 penalty. 

LUNCH:  West Broward High School will provide lunches which are included in the entry fee (Chick-fil-A Meal).  For SFCFL 1, you do not have to order lunch for students; however, you do need to note any vegetarians or vegan/gluten free meals for students. West Broward will offer a selection to the all students entered in the tournament and therefore you will receive a lunch ticket for pasta, salad, etc. for each paid student entry.

However, you must order for all judges, adults and/or coachesPlease remember to order lunch for your judges/coaches separately; cost for lunch for judges/coaches is $7.00. Judge and coach lunches will be automatically added if you choose to ignore this item. 

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:  Registration begins promptly at 7:15 a.m. and will close at 7:45 a.m.  Please be prompt. We will offer 5 rounds of competition in all events (3 rounds in Novice/Varsity Team Debate) and 3 sessions of Congressional Debate.

Note on Public Forum: the tournament will run the new additional and changes to the NSDA Public Forum rules including extending summaries by 1:00 minute and extending prep time by 1:00 minute during each round.

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE (Varsity/Novice)

2019 September/October Topic: Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative.

POLICY DEBATE

2019-2020:  Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States.

NOVICE POLICY SHOULD USE THE NOVICE POLICY PACKET for COMPETITIONWe will use the NDCA Novice Packet in its entirety except for the following guidelines: Counterplans/Ks will be allowed after October 31st. Addition of T arguments will be uploaded to a DB link. Second semester CFLs in Novice debate will follow good disclosure practices using the wiki to disclose affirmative and read and past 2NRs.
