Dear Coaches:
The Ball State University Speech Team, Department of Communication Studies, and College of Communication Media and Information are pleased to invite you to the Red Carpet Affair Junior, a middle school speech tournament to be held on our campus on November 2, 2019.  Our one day tournament will include 3 rounds of competition.  Awards will be presented to the top six speakers (double scored) in each event and top 3 schools in small (1 to 20 entries) and large (21+) divisions. 
Registration will be in the lobby of the Letterman Building.  Please register for the tournament by 5 pm on October 29th via SpeechWire. We will charge $2 fee per entry to help pay for costs associated with the tournament. We will accept cash or checks at registration. Please make checks payable to Ball State University.  You will receive a confirmation e-mail that includes directions and parking information. We look forward to welcoming to our beautiful campus. Tournament Information
We will offer Humorous, Dramatic, Declamation, Discussion, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Impromptu, Extemp, Memorized Duo, Scripted Duo, Radio Broadcasting & MS Debate.  We will follow the event rules as outlined on the Ihsfa website:
Round I – Commercial
30-minute prep and 1 minute speaking time 
Round II – Editorial  
Provided to the student, 1-minute prep and 1 minute speaking time
Round III –News 
2 minutes speaking time
Extemp (Domestic Questions)
Students will draw 30 minutes before the preliminary round and will deliver the same question in subsequent rounds.  We will provide 3 questions per student and after question selection they will receive a research article exploring the topic. 
Discussion Topic

Topic Climate Change /Sustainable Energy
1: What will be the costs ($, life style, travel, etc) of the remedies we take to combat climate
2: Will the actions we take today forestall the major impact on our environment?
3:  What are some of the feasible sources of sustainable energy for Indiana? 
Debate Resolution:
Resolved: The United States government should use an opt-out instead of an opt-in system for organ donation.

Double Entry
Students may enter two events, with the exception of Discussion. In duo, both contestants may double; however any given student may not participate in two duos of any kind.  Those students doubled in Impromptu must go to Impromptu last.  The student doubling in Radio Broadcasting must go t radio first. Double-entered students are responsible for getting to both events during rounds.  While judges will be made aware of double entered students on their ballots, students should still inform their judges that they are double entered.
Results Posting: Results from first and second rounds will be only be available for the coaches in the coaches lounge. 
We will have awards for the top 12 in all events.  Team Trophies will be given to the top 3 teams with 1 to 20 entries and to the top 3 teams with 21 and more entries.
Each school is required to provide one full-time qualified judge for each six entries entered or portion thereof. We can arrange for hired judges.  A hired judge can be hired for $30 (to cover 6 slots).
Concessions will be available from registration to awards and there is a food court as well. 
We should receive your entry no later than 5:00pm, Tuesday, October 29, 2019. While we prefer you register using Speechwire, if that is not possible mail us your entries to mkmoore@bsu.edu.
It is suggested that you park north of the Robert Bell building (RED R2 lot) and gain access to the Letterman building through the Robert Bell building.  Be sure to look for signs. Meters and “Reserved” (handicapped, business, and numbered) spaces are enforced 24/7. You will be ticketed! If you are having trouble with parking, finding Muncie, Ball State University, or the Letterman building please contact Mary Moore at (765)285-1957 or my cell phone number is 765-760-3700.
