We encourage judges to bring their laptops as we are delighted to announce that we will offer electronic balloting via Speechwire both days of the tournament. While we will offer electronic ballots, paper ballots will still be available for any judge who would prefer to write feedback and scores on standard ballots.

On-campus registration will be held in the lobby of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building on Saturday & Sunday morning. If you have questions, please call Mary @ 765-760-3700.

Here are some tournament details:

Entries

1. For the purpose of this tournament, NOVICE is defined as a student for whom 2019-2020 is their first year of collegiate competition.

2. A novice division will be offered in any IE event that has 1) more than 30 entries AND 2) at least 12 novice students. We will make every effort to offer a novice division and maintain quals for the national tournaments.

3. A student may enter only 3 events per pattern. However, she/he should be made aware that the rounds are one hour and 15 minutes and will not be extended if a student is unable to complete all three events in time allotted.

4. Semi-Finals will be held for events containing over 50 entries.

5. The deadline for receiving entries for both halves of the swing is 6:00 pm (EST) on Tuesday, October 8th. Entries should be submitted via speechwire.

Radio News Broadcasting:

Preparation time: 30 minutes (with draw procedure/format of Extemp)

Speaking time: 5 minutes maximum (time signals will NOT be provided by judge)

Contestants will be given a packet of source materials and will have 30 minutes to select and organize a 5-minute simulated radio new broadcast.  All material used in the broadcast must be provided by the tournament with the exception of any hypothetical station call letters, time and current weather conditions or forecast and no more than one commercial (maximum 30 seconds).  Contestants should strive to present a broadcast that resembles a live radio news segment and refrain from humorous devices (like the traffic girl falling out of the traffic copter or Bigfoot rampaging through town, etc). Maximum time limit for the speech is 5 minutes.  Students will be seated at a table during the performance and may use a stopwatch since time signals will not be given.  Judges will not face the contestant during the speech.  Students will speak in listed order.

**Competitors may NOT be entered in BOTH RADIO and EXT, as both events prep simultaneously.

Public Narrative

Speaking time: 5 minutes maximum—delivered from manuscript.

The Public Narrative event is a narrative speech designed to inspire audience belief or action through the sharing of a student’s personal experience.  Public Narratives are marked by clear development of the speaker’s personal story, enhancement of identification between the audience and issue or set of issues, emphasis of urgency, and vocal and nonverbal delivery choices that reflect the speech’s purpose. (For guidance on developing a public narrative, see Marshall Ganz work.)

Rather than using a 3-point structure with previews and other overt organizational devices, narrative speeches use to story to serve as the primary organizational element.

Quadrathon

For Age of Aquarius, we will give awards to the top 3 students competing in four or more OPEN events. If a student is entered in five or six events, her/his BEST FOUR will count toward quadrathon. Novice final rounds do NOT count toward quadrathon tabulation. For the ISU tournament, awards will be given to the top three speakers in quadrathon.

Sweepstakes

Team sweepstakes for Age of Aquarius will be awarded to the top three schools based on open final round points.  Team sweepstakes for the ISU half will be awarded to the top three schools based on open final round points.
