The Ft Lauderdale HS Debate Team cordially invites you to the 2019 "Flying L" . Please read the invitation carefully and adhere to all deadlines. Space is limited so enter as soon as possible. Last year the tournament had wait-lists that could not be cleared. Please be as accurate as possible as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you soon! Events DebateThere will 4 flighted rounds of PF & LD; 3 or 4 rounds of policy a. Policy Debate (Open) (Novice) will use the Florida Novice Packet and adhere to agreed upon limitations **19-20 NSDA Topic**. Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce Direct Commercial Sales and/or Foreign Military Sales of arms from the United States. b. Lincoln Douglas Debate (Novice) (Varsity) **Sept-Oct Topic** Varsity: Resolved: In the United States, colleges and universities ought not consider standardized tests in undergraduate admissions decisions. Novice: Resolved: Civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified. c. Public Forum (Novice and Varsity) **Sept/Oct. Topic** Resolved: The European Union should join the Belt and Road Initiative. Changes made by the NSDA concerning added time will be enforced. Newly adopted evidence expectations should be followed. Sides will be locked and affirmative will speak first. d. Legislative Debate (Novice and Varsity) Novice Congress will have three sessions. Top 3 in each chamber will receive awards Varsity Congress will have 2 preliminary sessions and break to a super session after lunch Speech Events: All events will be 5 random rounds NSDA rules for all except MX and DP who will follow CFL guidelines a. Dramatic Performance (Varsity) (Novice) b. Program Oral Interpretation (Varsity) (Novice) c. Extemporaneous Speaking (Varsity) (Novice) d. Informative Speaking (Varsity) (Novice) e. Duo Interpretation (Novice) (Varsity) f. Original Oratory (Novice) (Varsity) ***Novice divisions are for students who have less than 25 NSDA points/or equivalent experience before the start of the 2019-20 season. *** Any Middle School competitors are welcome in the Novice Division
Limits: 6 entries per event; all others will be wait-listed! Any event that does not reach a 12-person (or 12-team) field by the registration deadline will be eliminated or combined. Double Entries: Doubling is permitted in any two speech events. No doubling in a debate event. Judge Requirements: a. 1 judge per 2 TD/LD/PF b. 1 judge per 5 IE 1 Congress judge if there are entries in that division c. LIMITED number of judges for hire at $75.00. Let me know early. There currently are no policy judges for hire…sorry. WE WILL USE ELECTRONIC BALLOTS WHERE LOGISTICALLY POSSIBLE. PLEASE HAVE ALL JUDGES BRING A LAPTOP OR ELECTRINIC DEVICE. THEY NEED TO BE APPROPRIATELY TRAINED ON ELECTRONIC BALLOTS AND REGISTERED ON SPEECHWIRE. Please have all judges trained prior to the tournament. The judge video is a great place to send inexperienced judges.
Congress Information: Legislation will be due September 12. Submit Bills/Resolution in NSDA format. Send them to my email, james.wakefield@browardschools.com. They will be posted as they are received on Speechwire Please limit each division to two pieces of legislation. Label as novice, varsity, or both. The docket will be set at the tournament. There will be 2 preliminary sessions and a Super Session in Varsity. Novice will have three preliminary sessions, with awards going to the top three in each chamber. Lunch: Student meals are included. Please specify choices with your registration. Schools not entering specific lunch choices will have turkey ordered. All judges will receive a lunch buffet. Guests need to be included in lunch plans. Everyone will need a meal ticket. The cost is $7.00. Fee adjustments will be made for judge meals not ordered to match a school's entry. Coaches, don’t forget to add yourself. Fees: $20.00 per person per event. $40.00 per team event. This includes lunch! Double entered IE contestants may enter $5 charge. Entries close on Thursday September 12 at 6pm. Under-registered events will be announced that same day. Wait-listed students will be notified of their status as soon as possible. Drops will lose entry fee and judge meal fees beginning Sept 14. Day of tournament drops will be $25.00! Please make school checks payable to Ft Lauderdale HS Debate. Please limit personal checks. Times: Upstairs Cafeteria Registration will begin at 7:00am and end promptly at 8:00am. All judges should report to the registration area. Students may congregate in the Cafeteria Courtyard or Cafeteria itself. Extemp will draw in Room 2167 in Building 21 Lecture Hall, 3rd Floor). Postings will be in the cafeteria area. THERE WILL BE NO FORMAL OPENING ASSEMBLY. Directions: Interstate 95 to Sunrise Blvd. Go East on Sunrise to NE 4th Ave (Flying L Drive). Go North to 16thSt. The school is on the right.
