Dear Speech Coaches,

The New Castle High School speech team would like to cordially invite you to our tournament to be held on November 17, 2018. Registration will take place from 6:45-7:15 a.m. with extemp draw starting at 7:30 and round one of all events starting at 8:00. All events will go four straight rounds.

Registration is on speechwire.com.

Students may double at their own risk in all events EXCEPT discussion and student congress.

Events offered: all IHSFA speech events plus congress and versatility. Students are not allowed to compete with materials they used last season.

Versatility students will compete in poetry, prose, or POI round one; original oratory or informative round two; humor or drama round three; and impromptu round four. Students may use material from last year for ONE of the rounds of versatility, but the other two prepared rounds must be new material for this season. Points will be scored by individual round results as well as overall results. (Individual rounds will score 3, 2, 1, and ½ .) Versatility is limited to one person per team with a maximum of 6 entries. If you want a versatility spot reserved, email me at sdelay@ncweb.me and give me your school name and enter the name of the student who will be competing in versatility on speechwire. Once the six slots are claimed, the event will be filled.

Radio contestants need to bring a five-minute news program to be used for both rounds 1 and 4 that includes a music intro and outro as well as a commercial.  Choices for music: Alternative--Imagine Dragons, Foster the People, blink; Pop--Taylor Swift, Drake, Ariana Grande; Country--Dan and Shay, Maren Morris, Thomas Rhett. Commercial topic for news program round will be Jack’s Donuts. Round two will be a  two-minute ORIGINAL (written by the student based on research and his/her own opinion) editorial about the future of the internet. Students need to write this before the tournament and bring it ready to perform. Round three will be 2-minute on the spot with 2-minute prep at the tournament.

Congress will debate bills/resolutions 2, 3, 6, and 8 found on ihsfa.org--go to info tab and then topics.

Discussion will use the Socratic Seminar format and topics will be released the Monday prior to the tournament through speechwire.

Awards are scheduled to begin around 2:30.

Food and beverages will be for sale at the tournament. This is how we fund the tournament and pay for the awards, the custodian, the judges’ lounge, etc. Please do not bring in food and drinks for your team. Help us continue to be able to host by allowing us to meet our expenses for this tournament through concessions at this meet.
