Dear Colleagues:
The Concordia College Speech Team and North Dakota State University Forensics Team are pleased to invite you to attend the Talk of the Tundra Swing on Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18, 2018, at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. The Talk of the Tundra will offer parliamentary debate and two flights/two rounds of 11 AFA individual events. The debate portion of the tournament will be held on Saturday with 3 preliminary rounds, a semifinal and a final. In the event there are fewer than 8 parliamentary teams entered, the tournament will switch to a round-robin style with five total rounds and no out rounds.
Both halves of the swing will be held at Concordia College’s Integrated Science Center which has parking right by the building. Details on the schedule and registration process are below.

Registration:
Registration for each day should be submitted online by visiting Speechwire. If you have difficulties registering online, please contact Najla Amundson at namundso@cord.eduor 218-299-3583.
Registration will close at 12 pm CST on Tuesday, November 13th. Fees will be assessed at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, November 14th. Any changes made after 12:00 pm CST will be charged drop fees/uncovered slots/etc. as noted in the Add/Drop Fee section of the invitation.
Entries/Judges
Each IE competitor may be entered in up to 3 events per flight. Parli competitors may not compete in IEs on Day 1. Each IE entry is $8. Each Parliamentary Debate entry is $20.
One judge covers 6 IE entries or 2 Parli teams or one Parli team and 4 individual events. Uncovered slot fees are as follows: $15 per uncovered IE slot, and $35 per uncovered Parli team to pay for the hired judging pool. All team judges are expected to be available for final rounds and considered clean for final rounds.
Our hired judging pool will be going through a training session to ensure they are providing constructive feedback!
Add/Drop Fees
Fees will be assessed on Wednesday, November 14th, at 12:00 pm CST. A $15 add/drop fee will be charged for each IE change and a $30 fee for each debate change after that time.
Awards
The top six finalists in each event will receive an award. The top three in both Team Sweeps and Individual Sweeps will receive awards. Individual Sweeps are for competitors entered in 4 or more events and at least 2 genres of competition (PA/IE/LP). Parliamentary Debate awards will be given to the top 4 teams and top 5 debaters in the tournament. Sweepstakes points will be tallied as follows:

EventRules
· Individual Events--AFA-NIET, NFA, and/or Phi Rho Pi rules. Materials shall not have been used by a contestant in intercollegiate contests prior to Sept. 1 of the current year. A person may not use the same cutting/content or a portion of a cutting/content in more than one event.
· Students may triple enter in each flight.
· Parliamentary Debate— NPDA guidelines with the following exceptions:
o In-room topic announcement.
o No coaching/team prep during the 15-minute preparation time.
o No flex-time.
o No internet use allowed during prep.
o No warm room.
Impromptu Quotations:
Impromptu on Day 1 will include traditional quotations, one-word prompts and single-frame cartoons. Day 2 will include traditional quotations, objects and hypothetical situations.
Extemporaneous:
Extemporaneous questions on Day 1 will cover domestic and foreign policy questions in prelims and economic questions for finals. Day 2 will be economic and domestic policy questions in prelims and foreign policy in finals.
Competitive Practices
Upperclassmen will assist in tournament management for the day associated for that team. Students from Concordia and NDSU in their first year of competition will be participating on the day their school hosts the swing. Concordia and NDSU will be excluded from team sweepstakes awards both days.
Lodging
Room blocks have been reserved at two hotels close to Concordia College:
Microtel Inn in Suites is 1.8 miles from Concordia at 2915 12th St S, Moorhead, MN 56560($79.99 for 2 queen beds/BREAKFAST INCLUDED). The block will be dropped on October 26th. Their contact is 218.284.4022.
There is another block 1.4 miles from campus at the Courtyard by Marriott, 1080 28th Ave S, Moorhead, MN 56560($99 for two queen beds/NO BREAKFAST). Their contact is 218.284.5023. Ask for the “Talk of the Tundra” block for both hotels.
Food
In the morning, coffee, pastries, fruit and granola bars will be provided to you and your team without charge. We will also provide some healthy snacks mid-afternoon. There is an abundance of restaurants near campus and many food delivery options. A list will be provided when you register.
