Plymouth High School Speech and Debate

Holiday Greetings (since we are releasing near Thanksgiving and hosting near Christmas):

We would like to invite you to the John Oliver Speech Invitational which will be held at Plymouth High School on Saturday, December 2nd. The deadline for tournament entry will be Monday, December 3rd at 3:00 p.m (eastern).  All entry information will be collected on Speechwire. Please enter the following information:

1) Entries by name in the varsity and novice divisions. This must be done by the deadline!

2) Titles of pieces / speeches where appropriate.  We find this - among other details - will reduce the

possibility of students speaking in the wrong room. This is not as vital on Monday, but don’t

forget to do it by - let’s say - Thursday evening!

3) Judge Names - This feature will be left open so that you can add/adjust until late in the week - let’s

say Friday. Just don’t be upset if you get a friendly reminder because you are making me

Nervous. Ha

Please be sure to bring the appropriate number of judges (1 judge per 5 entries + any fraction above [6 entries = 2 judges]). We hope all judges will be prepared to write instructive, supportively critical comments to facilitate additional learning.

We are sorry for the early deadline; however, it allows us to communicate needed information to our administration, teachers, and food service early in the week.  Since we host several times each season (three tournaments - including only one district competition this year for two districts), we like to keep them on our good side.

DIVISIONS AND TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE

We will be offering both novice and varsity divisions.  Novice is defined as no high school tournament experience prior to August 1, 2018. Circumstances related to entry totals, room availability, and judges may necessitate combining divisions.  If divisions are combined, we will still provide separate finals and awards. Please tell students we will have Final Rounds (top 6) and Honor Final Rounds in the varsity division. We will definitely have Final Rounds in the novice division with a possibility of Honor Final Rounds if judges remain available. Last year, this was impossible, but you never know.

ENTRY

Teams may enter no more than 40 entries in either division (varsity / novice) and a total of no more than 60 for the tournament. Additionally, we ask that schools enter no more than 5 entries per division (5 varsity and 5 novice = okay / 6 varsity and 0 novice = not okay).  We will be scoring your top 40 entries for sweepstakes. We will be offering all current IHSFA events. We will allow three students from each team to triple at their own risk.

SPECIAL EVENT GUIDELINES

  • Students may double in any events except Discussion with the following restrictions:

    • We will allow students to double with the same partner in Duo and Original Performance.

    • Students may not enter both US and International Extemp.

    • Tripling restrictions will be the same as doubling.

  • Broadcasting program information and Discussion artifacts will be posted on Speechwire on Tuesday by 5:00.  Look for materials in the Downloads feature. This invitation will be there as well.

  • Broadcasting contestants will need to prepare:

    • Round 1:   5 minute program - including 30 sec. music copy and 30 sec. comm.

    • Round 2:   2 minute original editorial

    • Round 3: 5 minute program - same

    • Final: 2 minute on-the-spot (2 minutes prep at the tournament)

  • Impromptu will follow current IHSFA guidelines with a use of flex prep for all rounds. Doublers need to be aware of this impacting potential prep time for extemp. We will do our best to make this work without flighting the tournament. This may mean smaller sections in Impromptu compared to the other events to allow less stress on the students (and the host).

  • Extemp will draw for rounds 1 and 3 with round 3 used for the final.

You might speak to individuals on your team to see if they are interested in a change that week. I will send any other significant changes impacting students in e-mail updates along with my typical reminders. As always, we will attempt to do what is fairest for the most and work to have you home at a decent time.
