Dear Colleagues,
On SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2018, Lincoln East and Pius X will offer one speech tournament at two sites.  East will host a NOVICE division, while Pius X will handle VARSITY competition.  We are again pleased to announce the Pius X varsity division is a NIETOC qualifying tournament in HI, DI, Oratory, Informative, POI, and Duo this year!

Logistically we feel the tournament will work out well.  Please note:
>    Tournament registration times are sufficient to drop off novices and judges at East before taking varsity competitors to Pius X, which is about 6 blocks away.

>    We will NOT provide transportation from East to Pius X after the novice events have concluded.  You will need to arrange for your bus/van driver to transport students from East to Pius X for the awards ceremony.

>    POI (Program Oral Interpretation) will be offered as a VARSITY EVENT ONLY at Pius X.  Any novices who wish to compete in POI will need to compete on the varsity side.

>    PLEASE NOTE that novice extemporaneous will take place at East and varsity extemporaneous will take place at Pius X – please plan accordingly.  If you have a situation where varsity and novice extempers need to be in one location, they will all need to compete in the varsity division at Pius X.

>    Judges will only be used at one site - please divide your judges between East and Pius X based on the number of entries you send to each location.  Mark each judge as "Varsity" or "Novice" so they are assigned to the appropriate location.  Nobody will need to run back and forth between the schools.  If you don't have two coaches (for supervision) that's okay.  Just leave a judge representing you wherever you're not.  In case of an emergency, tournament directors will have cell  phones to contact each other and you.

We will have concessions available, and of course our coaches’ and judges’ lounge will once again be well stocked with goodies.  We will make every effort to make this an outstanding early tournament for you and your team.

Let us know if you have questions about the “Turkey Talk.”  We hope to see you on the 17th!

FORMAT:       There will be three preset rounds breaking to finals. Students may double enter in all events and may triple enter (at their own risk) only if all three events are individual events at either site.  No competitor may use the same script or parts of the same script in more than one event.

ENTRIES:       Please enter ONLINE at <speechwire.com>.  Click on the “Tournaments Calendar” button and select the “Pius X/Lincoln East Turkey Talk.” If you have questions about your entry,

e-mail Nolan DeWispelare: nolan.dewispelare@piusx.net.

LIMITS:           Because room availability may be restricted, please limit entries to four per event per division (four novice, four varsity for instance).  Contact us directly if you have a special request to exceed this limit.  Understand your students may hit each other if sections are few and your entries are many.  We must be able to use your judges, so we may need to clear sections to make this possible.

DROP/ADD:   Any changes will be accepted through Thursday, November 15.  No adds will be allowed on the day of the tournament.

FEES:             Entry fees will be $8.00 per event.  Any entries not "covered" by your judges cost an additional $15.00 per entry.

JUDGES:       You must furnish one judge for every 5 entries or part thereof.  PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO PROVIDE JUDGES.  We were very tight on judges last year, and a shortage of judges threatens the efficiency of the tournament.  You may use non-competing varsity team members who you think will do a good job with the novices as judges in the East division only.

All judges must be available for finals.

AWARDS:      Team trophies through third place.  Combined sweeps trophy for Varsity + Novice.  All finalists in each event will receive awards.  Ribbons will be awarded to individuals ranking 1st & 2nd in each round.

EXTEMPORANEOUS--Current events topics since August 2018.  Thirty-minute preparation, seven-minute maximum speaking time, no minimum limit.  One notecard is optional.

ORATORY--An original speech composed by the speaker intended to persuade, convince, or inspire.  Ten-minute maximum time limit.  Manuscript is optional.

INFORMATIVE--An original speech composed by the speaker intended to inform or explain.  Eight minutes maximum.  One 4 x 6 notecard optional.  Visual aids are allowed.

ENTERTAINMENT--An original speech composed by the speaker.  This is a public address event.  The purpose is to entertain, but the speech should have a serious point.  This is not original comedy, nor is it original humorous interp.  Eight minutes maximum time limit.  One 4 x 6 notecard optional.

HUMOROUS & DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION--These will be separate events in interpretation which may be taken from prose or drama.  Ten-minute maximum time limit.  Manuscripts are optional.

POETRY--A six-to-eight-minute presentation of poetry.  If more than one poem is used, the selections should be linked by a common theme or author.  Transitional statements between poems are optional.  Manuscripts are mandatory.

DUO INTERPRETATION--A ten-minute max. presentation of a cutting from a play. Manuscripts are optional.  This is NOT duet acting.

PROGRAM ORAL INTERP (POI) will be offered as a VARSITY EVENT ONLY at Pius X.  Any novices who wish to compete in POI will need to compete on the varsity side. The program is comprised of poetry, prose, and drama (at least 2 genres represented) around a central theme or idea.  Time limit is 10 minutes.

PLEASE NOTE: We reserve the right to combine Public Address events (INF, ENT, & OO) and/or Interpretation events (HI & DI and possibly POE) in either division if entry numbers do not warrant separate events.  East and Pius X team members may compete and be eligible for individual awards, but neither host will compete for sweepstakes.  Finally, if there are seven or fewer entries in an event or division, no final round will be held.  The three preliminary rounds will be “cumed” to determine the placements.
