Dear Speech and Debate Coaches,

You are invited to join Riverside Junior High for our third annual speech tournament. This year, we are also excited to offer debate! Our meet will take place on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019. Registration will begin at 7:30 AM. First rounds will follow at 9:00 AM.

We will offer all IHSFA Middle School Speech events, and we will be following all of the rules outlined in the Middle School IHSFA handbook. For debate, we will be utilizing the Middle School Debate style that was developed over the summer by Candy Brown et al. For more information about debate and our resolution, please check the downloadable files or e-mail Brooke Shoopman (bshoopman@hse.k12.in.us). Our resolution will be the same as the Big Questions Debate resolution (Resolved: Humans are primarily driven by self-interest) in order to ensure continuity from our meet to the Bloomington meet. For discussion, we will again be utilizing the socratic method that is used at high school competitions. Please check the downloadable files or e-mail Brooke Shoopman for a copy of those prompts. All rounds of discussion will be related to the theme of perspective and perception.

We hope that you and your team are able to join us for another great tournament!

Sincerely,

Brooke Shoopman and Cathy Whelan
