Cannon Falls Invitational Speech Tournament

The Cannon Falls speech team will be hosting the CF Invitational Speech Tournament on Saturday, Feb 3rd, 2018.  We look forward to hosting you for a day of exciting MSHSL speech competition.

Entry: NO DOUBLE ENTRY.  We are using www.speechwire.com to run the tournament.  Entry is open now.

Divisions: To create a great first weekend for all competitors, we are hosting both Varsity and Novice divisions.  A Novice competitor needs to meet the following criteria: 1) a first time ever competitor in speech (changing events does not count), and can be in any grade; and/or 2) any student in 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade who has never broken into a finals round at any previous varsity tournament.  We trust that coaches will only put students in the Novice category that will benefit from the protected competition.  Varsity and novice divisions will compete together for the three rounds; however, they will be separated for awards.

Entry Deadline: Tuesday, Jan 30th, 2018, by 5 pm. Fees will be set at this time.  We have room for about 400 entries; if we exceed capacity, the entry system will close early.  Early entry is appreciated for planning purposes and guarantees your spot in the tournament.

Entry Update: Please update your entry with any changes through out the week, including the morning of the tournament.  Please text or call Cal at 651-769-5194 en route to the tournament to confirm that the online entry is correct or to give drops/adds. The phone will be answered starting 7:00 am or before on tournament day.

Facilities: We will likely use the high school and elementary buildings to maximize the size of the tournament.  Unfortunately, to use our space well, the judges room is on the far west end of the high school and the elementary building is several hundred yards east of the high school.  Please inform judges of the possibility of a long (and maybe cold) walk to a round in the elementary building.  Students competing at the elementary building will be there for all rounds.  All speakers in a category will be in the same building so varsity speakers can help novices. The location of events won't be known until after the entry deadline, so this is why double entry isn't possible. Please prepare all students for a possible outside walk to the elementary building.

Fees: Registration fee will be $6.50 per entry.  The online Invoice will be frozen at the deadline so you know the actual amount.  Make checks payable to Cannon Falls High School.  If sending the check, please send c/o Cal Vande Hoef, Speech Team.

Format : There will be three rounds in each of the 13 MSHSL categories. Students will draw for all rounds and from all topics. There will be ribbons for the top six place winners in each category, varsity and novice, plus honorable mentions based on the size of the category.  Categories without enough novice speakers to host a round (5 or more) will be collapsed into varsity competition.

Judges: Each school will be required to provide one judge for every six entries; please enter as much judge information as possible online.  Because having varsity and novice divisions will use more judges, it's very important that each school bring its required judges. If you need to hire a judge, please contact Cal directly to see if we have any extra available.

Food: Concessions will be available and a lunch for sale.  Updated food information will be sent to attending teams the week of the tournament. We have several students in our school with severe allergies, so we ask you to refrain from bringing peanut products into the building and keep all food in the cafeteria.

Questions: Contact Cal Vande Hoef at vandehoef.cal@cf.k12.mn.us or 651-769-5194.
