The Munster High School Debate Team will host a Novice Only Debate Meet on Saturday, October 7, 2017. This meet is very much intended as a “Get Your Feet Wet” introduction to debate for this year’s novices and schools who have not done debate before. Observers are very welcome and encouraged!
“Angels” will be permitted in Policy, PFD, and LD during the morning two rounds, limited to assisting teams during prep time – not during speeches.
We will feature competition in Policy, Public Forum, LD and Congress and World Schools Debate. A novice competitor is someone who has not done a debate event before this year.
Policy: Novice Restrictions apply – Novice Affirmative Case Areas:
Public Forum: October topic: Deployment of anti-missile system is in South Korea basic interest.
LD: September/October topic: In the U.S. National Service should be compulsory
Congress will Debate Resolutions:
2. Compulsory voting in U.S. 5. Temporarily ban fracking 10. Provide paid family leave 15. Mental health programs in schools
If a school is interested in providing a presiding officer (at least one year experience and 200 NFL points) let us know.
World Schools prepared topics:
1. This House believes hate speech should not be legally protected 2. This House believes development of the national resources of the Artic regions should be prohibited.
Students in Congress will not be required to debate a full hour on each bill/resolution. We will expect to have at least an affirmative and negative speech on each bill before voting on it. At least 20 minutes debate on each bill/resolution.
Varsity Debaters with one year experience and 200 NFL points are eligible to Judge in all events.
AWARD CERTIFICATES FOR THE TOP 8 teams/competitors in each event.
Tentative Schedule REGISTRATION: 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. (Munster time) in the School Media Center Round One: 8:00 a.m. Round Two: 9:30 a.m. Round Three: 12:15 p.m. Round Four: 1:45 p.m. Awards: 3:30 p.m.
Food will be available. PLEASE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO BRING SMALL BILLS SO WE ARE NOT CONSTANTLY RUNNING OUT FOR CHANGE! Please note – we run this meet on a shoestring so everyone pays for food – Thanks!
JUDGES: Please bring one judge for each two entries (Policy and Public Forum) or one for each four entries (LD & Congress). Remember, varsity debaters are eligible to Judge. Please remind them we are working with Novices, and would like positive and constructive criticism.
ENTRY RESPONSES: Please submit your entry to Speechwire by Tuesday, October 3, 2017, so we know who is coming. If you are unable to do so, fax or email your entry to Steven Kennedy as indicated below. If you know schools interested in Debate who would like to see what it is like, encourage them to come – remember - observers welcome!
