HSE Novice "Get Your Feet Wet" Tournament

Hamilton Southeastern High School would like to invite you to our 1st annual “Get Your Feet Wet” Novice Speech and Debate Tournament on October 15th, 2016.  Please Note Items 1, 7, and 10.

Here are the particulars:

1.     CASUAL ATTIRE PREFERRED!  School appropriate clothing (Khakis or nice jeans with Polo Shirt or Button-up) or professional attire maybe worn for this meet.  The goal is to focus on the performance and provide feedback for the upcoming season.

2.     The tournament will consist of 4 straight round of competition.  Top 8 contestants in each event will be awarded and top 3 schools will receive awards.

3.     Contestants can double at their own risk in every event Except for Discussion, Congress, and World School Debate.

4.     Novice is defined as first year competitors or competitors who have never competed in World School Debate.

5.     Tournament Deadline for registrations is October 7th by 3:30 p.m.

6.     If competitors are doubled in Impromptu, contestants should go to Impromptu first and then may leave the room.

7.     Extemp Draw is at 7:30 a.m.  Contestants will again draw for 3rd round. ** Depending on which schools attend, Draw Time may be moved back due to travel.

8.     We will be offering all IHSFA events along with POI and Informative.

9.     Radio rounds will be following new format:

a.      Rd 1—5 minute News Program (Music Lead in/ Lead out, Commercial on Department Stores—Macys, Nordstrom, etc. —Newscast) prepared by student.

b.     Rd 2—2 minute editorial on Mandatory Health Insurance.  Student written.

c.      Rd 3—2 minute Prep/ 2 minute Broadcast On The Spot.

d.     Rd 4—Same as round 1.

10.  Judges:  1 judge for every 5 contestants.  Our tournament hopes to include 2 judges per round.  For this to work, we need a combination of Student judge (qualified Varsity Team Members with 150 NFL points), Parents, Adults, and Coaches available. The more judges we have the faster the meet runs.  At the end of the fourth round, judges will conduct a mini-coaching session with their contestants.  This can focus on Etiquette, Do's and Don't in a round, or Critiques.  Runners will pick up ballots to not delay the tournament.

11.  Congress Bills:  3,10, 11, 13

12.  Discussion will be using Socratic Seminar ideology along with the proposed rubric.  Stimuli will be given the Monday prior to the tournament.

13.  Impromptu will use a Flex Prep style of a total of 7 minutes.  Students may use as little or as much time as needed without exceeding the maximum time.  Topics will be an Object/Picture, Quote, Word, and Current Event.

14.  Each school may enter up to 8 contestants in each Speech Event; Congress may have up to 8, and 3 World School Debate Teams of 5.

15.  All other IHSFA rules apply.

16.  Food will be provided all day.  Please help us offset the cost of hosting by purchasing food and drinks.
