Welcome to the FCDI's The Great Debate: National Civics and Debate Championship! We are excited for another year of rigorous triathlon speech and debate competition.

Below is key information about this year's championship. Please stay tuned as more information will be added to this page and provided to coaches as the tournament nears.

Important Note: Do not register students in SpeechWire. Register judges in SpeechWire by November 30. The obligation is 1 judge per 2 entries or portion thereof. Student judges are permitted, but may only cover middle school entries, and any student judges must be properly supervised at the middle school competition site on Saturday as well as the combined competition site on Sunday.

Events & Divisions
NCDC will offer two divisions - middle and high school. Each competitor will compete in Congressional Debate, Impromptu Speaking, and Extemporaneous Debate. Awards will be given in individual events and overall.

Tournament Venue & Competition Sites
On Friday, January 15th, all activities will occur at the Double Tree on Major Blvd in Orlando (5780 Major Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819). On Saturday, busses will transport registered attendees (judges, student competitors, and registered coaches) to their respective competition sites and back to the Double Tree at the end of the day. The high school competition site on Saturday is Lake Buena Vista High School (11305 Daryl Carter Pkwy, Orlando, FL 32836) and the middle school competition site on Saturday is Southwest Middle School (6450 Dr Phillips Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819). On Sunday, all registered attendees (including middle school) will be transported to Lake Beuna Vista High School in the morning, to the field trip site in the afternoon after competition, then back to the hotel in the evening. The tournament will conclude with breakfast for registered attendees and awards at the Double Tree on Monday, January 18th.

2026-2027 FCDI Team Registration is Required for NCDC
For out-of-state teams or teams who have otherwise not completed 2026-2027 FCDI team registration - the head coach MUST complete the 2026-2027 FCDI registration forms and enter NCDC competitors into the student roster by November 6, 2026. This is so that we can collect important information from participating teams and students.
All students must be fully entered into the student roster to be able to participate at NCDC. Any students/teams not entered by November 6, 2026 will be unable to attend. As with all FCDI tournaments, the head or assistant coach of record must be in attendance, or a proxy coach must be designated (please see the instructions below for declaring a proxy coach and contact FCDI@fldoe.org).

Attendance
Registered judges, registered coaches, and accepted student competitors will receive a badge at registration. A badge will be required to enter rooms reserved for registered attendees (registered attendees are judges, registered coaches, and accepted student competitors). These spaces/times will be indicated on the full schedule released to participants before the tournament. While parents/guardians, observers, and other guests will be permitted to observe and attend during rounds of competition, the judge and PO training, National Civics & Debate College, Career & Leadership Showcase, and awards, the Welcome Reception, field trip, and meals are reserved for registered attendees only. Please communicate these expectations to your team so they may prepare.

Drops/Withdrawals
Teams have between October 19 and November 30 to notify FCDI of any drops at FCDI@fldoe.org. Any drops made after November 30 will result in a $50 fine per student. Withdrawals or no-shows without notice prior to January 8 will result in a fine equivalent to the full cost of attendance and any non-refundable expenses incurred.

Tournament Information
  • Events: NCDC uses a triathlon tournament structure. All students will compete in all three events: Extemporaneous Debate, Impromptu Speaking, and Congressional Debate. Individual awards will be given in each event and overall.
  • Divisions: NCDC offers a middle school and high school division.
  • Topics: Legislation for Congressional Debate and topic areas for Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Debate will be released no later than 10 days prior to the tournament.
  • Judging: The judge obligation is 1 judge per 2 entries. Student judges are permitted, but many only cover middle school entries, and any student judges must be properly supervised at the middle school competition site on Saturday as well as the combined competition site on Sunday. All judges are required to attend at least one session of judge training on Friday, January 15th. There are three sessions of judge training (Session 1: 5:30 – 6:30 PM, Session 2: 6:45 – 7:45 PM, and Session 3: 8 – 9 PM). The online judging training course is not required to judge at NCDC and may not substitute for the required in person judge training on Friday.
  • Venue: Our primary venue is the DoubleTree Hilton Orlando (5780 Major Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819). This is where the event will take place on Friday and Monday. We will also meet here for bus departure Saturday and Sunday morning and Saturday for dinner. The competition portion of the event will take place at Lake Buena Vista High School (for high school competition on Saturday and all competitors on Sunday) and Southwest Middle School (middle school competition on Saturday).

Lunch on Saturday and Sunday will likewise be provided. Dinner on Saturday is provided at the DoubleTree Orlando after competition for registered attendees. Dinner on Sunday will be served at the field trip location for registered attendees. Breakfast will be served likewise prior to awards on Monday.
    • If you have a student with food allergies needing accommodation and they did not list this information on the application, please reach out with the specific allergies/accommodation to FCDI@fldoe.org no later than November 30.
  • Lodging: Teams are responsible for their own lodgings. A room block has been reserved at the DoubleTree Hilton Orlando (5780 Major Blvd, Orlando, FL 32819). While this is where the event will be primarily located, teams are not required to stay in this hotel. Please send the forms included in the invitation to Brandon.Bozeman2@Hilton.com to reserve lodging at the DoubleTree. Please do not reserve any more rooms than required for your students, coach(es), and judges to attend. There are several other hotels within walking distance, and we will notify teams if more rooms are available for observers and other guests.
  • Field Trip: Buses will depart the competition site on Sunday afternoon to transport registered attendees to our field trip location. Dinner will be served at the field trip location. If any participants do not wish to attend the field trip, they may arrange their own dinner and transportation on Sunday.

Financial Assistance Application
Due November 6, 2026. Florida and out of state schools may apply for financial assistance to attend NCDC. Assistance will be provided as a reimbursement for attendance-related travel and lodging expenses. Schools should be prepared to cover lodging and transportation costs prior to receiving reimbursement.

Declare a proxy coach (if necessary)
It is required for all FCDI tournaments that a coach of record (one of the coaches listed on FCDI registration and approved to supervise the team) must attend. If the head or assistant coach of record cannot attend, the head coach may designate a proxy coach on a per tournament basis. Submit a request for a proxy coach by providing a letter from the principal stating that the proxy coach is approved to supervise the students at a particular tournament to FCDI@fldoe.org. Letters requesting a proxy coach must include the name of the tournament, location, date and name of the proxy coach in official school letterhead due by the tournament registration deadline. Independent teams must notify the FCDI of any proxy coach and must provide parent/guardian permission for each student.

Next Steps
  • Schools may apply for financial assistance by November 6, 2026, if applicable.
  • Communicate to FCDI@fldoe.org if any competitor withdraws or has specific food allergies/accommodations.

  • Enter judges in SpeechWire by November 30, 2026. You may make edits as needed, as long as you have met your obligation (one judge per two entries or portion thereof). You do not enter students into SpeechWire.
