Hastings Bronco Bash (in person)
General information This is a College tournament in Nebraska. View manager contact information Everyone,
The coaches and students of Hastings College (Broncos) invite you to an asynchronous tournament November 10th-13th, 2026, and an in-person tournament in Hastings, NE, on Saturday, November 14th, 2026. See the invitation here.
Our in-person tournament will offer three experimental events, and all three will count towards team sweepstakes. Experimental events will be flighted/scheduled based on entries.
Cold Read Monologue (CRM) - Performers will be presented with a monologue for a character. For each round, every performer will receive the same monologue on the spot, in the same fashion as an impromptu speaking round. (Performers will enter the room one at a time so they do not receive early exposure to the monologue.) Once in the round, the performer will be given a paper copy of the monologue so they may add notes and annotations to the monologue before performing. Performers are not to cut or alter the monologue. The aim of this event is to provide subtext and character development to the provided text. Performers will have a total of 7 minutes for both preparation and performance. Judges will provide verbal time signals during preparation and hand time signals during performance. (We recommend 3 minutes of prep and 4 minutes of performance.) Timing begins upon acceptance of the monologue. Everyday Questions (EQ) - An impromptu speech, substantive in nature, with topic selections varied by round and by section. Topics will be derived from questions that vary in scope. Some examples of questions might be: “What is your favorite season?” “How can teachers better support college students?” “What sport needs to be banned?” “Why don’t people read anymore?” Speakers will have a total of 7 minutes for both preparation and speaking. (We recommend up to 2 minutes of preparation and 5 minutes of speaking.) Timing commences with the acceptance of the topics sheet. Limited notes are permitted. Judges will provide verbal time signals during preparation and hand time signals during performance. Mixed Improv Duet Acting (MIDA) - An improvised acting performance composed of two students (from different schools) who portray an original scene derived from a provided scenario (in a character-problem-location format; e.g. a patron informing a librarian of an issue in the nonfiction section). The original scene performed should establish two characters, a situation or problem, and a solution to the conflict. Performers will have a total of 7 minutes for both preparation and performance. (We recommend up to 2 minutes of preparation and 5 minutes of performance.) Timing commences with the acceptance of the topics sheet. Judges will provide verbal time signals during preparation and hand time signals during performance. (Because this is an acting event, two chairs may be used in the performance. Performers may look at each other and touch each other.)
