A GJHS/CHS Novice Tournament
General information This is a High School tournament in Colorado. View manager contact information
Hello and welcome to the CHS/ GJHS novice tournament!
We look forward to a great season, and we are happy that you are here on such a spooky day.
A few important notes:
1) Tournament Information:
- The tournament will be held at Grand Junction High School (GJHS, the one with the Tiger).
- There will be a $10.00 fee per entry. So one PF team will be $20.00.
- There will be food provided for judges and coaches, but we'll have a concession stand for others.
- There will be a bake sale at the tournament!
2) Tournament Structure:
- We will have 3 rounds, but each round will be a SINGLE WAVE.
- SINGLE ENTRY ONLY. I REPEAT, SINGLE ENTRY ONLY.
- There will be a Finals round for any event with enough entries.
3) This is a novice tournament, so here is what we are considering a novice:
- Someone who has no experience in high school debate.
- Someone who wants to do a new event and HAS NO MORE THAN 1 SEMESTER OF HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
To address a few notable examples:
- A student who competed in a Lions Club speech competition is a novice. (That's about the same as giving a presentation in an ELA class)
- A student who took a forensics class is a novice.
- A student who competed in LD last year for less than one semester is a novice in speech or interp events. They are not a novice in debate events.
If you disagree with these definitions and examples, feel free to bring it up at the end-of-year meeting.
5) If a student is not a novice, they can judge! Please don't sign them up to judge an event if you don't think they can.
6) Here are the events we are offering:
Debate:
- LD
- PF
- BQ (Central has two entries in BQ, so if this surprises you, that's why it's here.)
Speech:
- OO
- Info
- Impromptu (NSDA version: 7 total minutes, including prep time and speech time)
- USX
- IX
(Depending on entries, we may combine USX and IX)
Interp:
- HI
- DI
- Poetry Interp
- POI
(Depending on entries, we may combine DI/Poetry, and or DI/HI/Poetry).
- DUO
- CST
Notable Missing Events:
Congress: unless 15 novices want to do it, we won't have it. If you would like to complain for a novice, make sure they are willing to write a bill.
1v1 Value Debate: They can start with LD and practice research.
Extempt topics will be released two weeks in advance, though they will be related to the topics for LD, PF, and BQ. To ease up on the research for the novices.
