Please share these links with your students and strongly suggest that they should watch these videos before the tournament begins on Saturday. The workshops will be supplemental to the content on these videos.
Wayne State University and the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League (MISL) would like to extend an invitation to our FREE Online Workshops and Mini Tournament, for novices and beginners*. This event will be hosted virtually via ZOOM on Saturday, September 26th from 9:30 AM to 4:15 PM.
The MISL Mini will be split into two components:

The mini tournament will consist of three rounds and will take place from 9:30am to 1:00pm. There will be no elimination rounds. We will offer rounds in 5 events: Impromptu, Informative, Persuasive, Prose and Dramatic Interp. Descriptions of these events can be found below.

After rounds, we will host a series of workshops. Please note that these workshops will have an ASYNC / prerecorded component; we will send out links to YouTube videos to all tournament participants at least a week in advance, and we strongly encourage your novices & beginners to watch these videos. On the day of the MISL mini, we will host 3 interactive workshops centered around the 3 types of IE events: Limited Prep, Public Address, and Interpretation Events. We encourage novices and beginners to attend all 3 workshops, and even non-registered judges, coaches, and students are welcome to attend these workshops
*Novice & Beginner Eligibility: A novice is an undergraduate who has not yet competed in collegiate speech competition. All novices are eligible for all the events at the MISL Mini. We are also extending the eligibility to include “beginners,” who we are defining as undergraduates with very little to no experience in a category. For example, if a student has competed only in interp events, they can try a Limited Prep category here as a beginner. Or if a student came onto the team very late in the season and only went to one or two tournaments, but didn’t break in any events, they can compete here. For beginner eligibility, we ask that coaches exercise their best discretion OR they can reach out to us to confirm their student’s eligibility.

Students and judges MUST register on speechwire.com to participate.

Entries should be received by Tuesday, September 23rd at 5:00 PM

Students should enter no more than 3 events.

All students competing in the mini tournament must attend all three competition rounds on Saturday, September 26th.

Michigan schools need a clean judge for each 6 entries.

Clean judges should not have taught or coached your students in any way.

Additionally, clean judges must not have competed in the last 2 years.

Please let us know of any other judging conflicts.

If you cannot get a clean judge, please let us know because we may be able to work something out!

The first three Non-Michigan schools are also welcome to join us with up to three total entries, and the following parameters apply:

The first entry is free, and no judge is needed!

If two entries are made, a judge is needed for ONE round
-
If 3 entries are made, a judge is needed for TWO rounds.

Judges must possess a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent or have completed four (4) years of collegiate competition

Awards
Certificates will be e-mailed to the top six persons in each event, and they will be announced at the conclusion of the event via ZOOM and SpeechWire. As per Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League bylaws, sweeps points are counted differently for Michigan and Non-Michigan Schools.
Event Descriptions

IMPROMPTU - Each contestant will receive quotations, editorial cartoons or objects, and they will have seven minutes to divide between preparation and speaking. It is suggested that the contestant's speaking time be at least three minutes. Judges usually expect an introduction, body, and conclusion.

INFORMATIVE - Each contestant will deliver an original, factual speech to fulfill the general purpose of informing the audience. Visuals may or may not be used to supplement and/or reinforce the message. The speech should be delivered from memory. At this tournament, screen sharing is allowed, so PowerPoint will be an option! Time limit is ten minutes maximum.

PERSUASIVE - Each contestant will deliver an original, factual speech to fulfill the general purpose of persuading the audience. Visuals may or may not be used to supplement and/or reinforce the message. The speech should be delivered from memory. At this tournament, screen sharing is allowed, so PowerPoint will be an option! Time limit is ten minutes maximum.

PROSE - Each contestant is to prepare and deliver one 8-10 min. selection of prose. (Plays/poetry are not eligible.) If more than one selection is used, original transitions could be used as needed. Limited movement is acceptable. The time limit includes introductions. Manuscripts required.

DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION (DI) – This event must use material from the stage, screen or radio. The performer can represent one or more characters and must use a manuscript. Maximum time limit – 10 minutes, including an original introduction.
