Junior High/Middle School Meet

Saturday, May 2, 2026

Battle Creek Elementary School

It’s our pleasure to have you and your middle school/junior high speech teams at the return of the BC Braves Jr. Classic!! We are thrilled to provide students with the opportunity to compete one last time this season! This contest is open to all students in 6th-8th grade.  Each student may be triple entered (just be certain that students understand the time constraints and expectations of triple entries).  All events aside from extemp will have 3 rounds with no finals. Extemp will take place in two rounds, with two judges in one round so all students receive 3 ballots.

Events Offered:

   - Declamation - An eight-minute maximum speech that was originally written and delivered by another. A competitor may choose any speech that was once delivered in public.

   - Duet/Duo - 12-minute maximum performance by two students of a cutting of play, skit, or screenplay.  A student-written introduction is expected. Either Duo or Duet-type pieces are allowed. Focus can be on- or off-stage. All students will be allowed (but not required) to use a table, two chairs, and a script.

   - Entertainment - 10-minute maximum student-written speech whose purpose is to entertain an audience. Students may use visual aids and may perform with or without a notecard.

   - Extemporaneous - Students are presented with a choice of three questions related to national and international current events and are given 60 minutes to prepare a speech with no time minimum and a 7-minute maximum answering the selected question. Students will be allowed full internet access during prep and 1 notecard during performance.

   - Humorous - A 10-minute maximum performance of a comedic cutting from a book, short story, comic book, play, or screenplay by one person.  A student written introduction is expected, and students may perform with or without the copy of the script.

   - Informative - 10-minute maximum student-written speech whose purpose is to inform an audience. Students may use visual aids and may perform with or without a notecard.

   - OID - A 15-minute maximum cutting of a play, book, or screenplay performed by a group of 3-5 students. On- and off-stage focus are permitted and scripts are required. A student-written introduction is expected, and groups are permitted 1 box per member.

   - Persuasive - 10-minute maximum student-written speech whose purpose is to persuade an audience. Students are not allowed to use visual aids, but may perform with a copy of their speech in hand.

   - Poetry - A 4-8 minute performance of one poem or a group of poems centered around a common theme. A student-written introduction of the program is expected, and students must perform with a copy of their script in-hand.

   - Program of Oral Interpretation - A 10-minute maximum program of literature centered around a theme, topic, or argument. Must include at least 2 literary selections. A student-written introduction including a clear thesis is expected, and students must perform with a copy of their script in-hand.
