Welcome to the Duluth East Speech Invitational

 

East students, parents, and staff want to welcome you to Duluth East High School.  East is a comfortable site for competition.  Join us on for a fun day of speaking and comraderie.  

 

Date: Saturday, February 28, 2026. Duluth East High School at 301 E. 40th Avenue East.  

Categories: We will be offering all 13 MSHSL categories. 

Registration Deadline: As so as you've decided, please start to put in registration number.  Starting on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 9:00 PM, drops will not result in a change of statement (so you'll still be charged for entries you drop after 9 PM). 

Entry Limits: There are no team or category entry limits. In smaller events members of your team might speak with other teammates.

Entry Fees: $7 per entry. Checks payable to Duluth East High School Speech.

Entry Changes: Entry changes (drops or adds) can be made on the speechwire.com tournament site up until the end of registration, Saturday, February 28, 8:00 AM. We will be site scheduling all rounds of competition in order to make sure rounds are as balanced as possible. For this reason, registration must be completed promptly by 8:00 AM.

Double Entering:  Double entering is allowed in ALL categories, including discussion. Discussion will start 15 minutes later to accommodate those double entries (discussants should speak first and then report to the draw room). Discussants are not be allowed to double enter in a draw event. Draw category double entries are allowed, but students shall not double enter in 2 draw categories. 

Judging Requirements: Teams need to bring 1 judge for every 6 entries or fraction thereof. A small number of judges will be available for hire at $95 for the day. Please email Greg Jones if you need to hire a judge by Monday, February 223, 2026.  The earlier the better!

Judging Finals:  We ask that ALL judges be available to judge finals.

Tournament Format: Three preliminary rounds and a final (1-6).  Honor rounds may be availble based on category and total registration.

Paperless Tournament:  In an effort to reduce paper waste, we will be using eBallots, posting schematics electronically, and on our atrium and mezzanine walls.  A live document will be shared with maps and other details.  Judges: We will have limited paper maps and ballots for those judges who prefer the written critiques.

Storytelling:  Stories - All Stories

Extemp. Speaking - US and Foreign - Various

In ALL Draw events:  1. No repeating cuttings. 2. Your selection will automatically appear on the judge critique.  3. There will be a new draw for final rounds.  4. Following rules surrounding not talking after draws is expected.

Discussion:  Areas III and IV.

Concession Stand Options:  We will host a concession stand throughout the day.  Students will find various food and beverage options!
