Greetings from Staples-Motley.

The Staples Host Lions Speech Tournament is to be held Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Staples-Motley High School. The competition is for students grades 6-12, in all 13 MSHSL. Double entries are allowed, including discussion. You can not double enter 2 draw categories or 1 draw and discussion.

Cost is $8.00 per entry with duo considered one entry.  Make checks payable to: ISD 2170. Bring checks the day of the meet or mail to the SMHS address directly at 401 Centennial Dr, Staples, MN 56479 beforehand.

Please bring 1 judge for every 6 entries (7 entries = 2 judges).

The tournament will consist of 3 rounds and a final. Awards will be given to the top 6 speakers in each category, with an extra special award to the champions, and those earning a superior rating, as well.  Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 teams.

Concessions will be available for purchase for students. Coaches, judges, and bus drivers can find a wide variety of food and drinks in the judges lounge.

Please register students by Noon Tuesday, February 17th . Drops/adds will be accepted on SpeechWire until you arrive. Text or call Kip at 218-296-3734 if having trouble making changes by 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning.

Team check-ins starts at 8:00 and end at 8:30 a.m.  Coaches/judges meeting at 8:55 a.m.

Round 1 draws start at 9:00 and Round 1 starts at 9:30 for all but Discussion.  Discussion rounds all start 15 minutes LATER to allow for double entries.

Paperless Tournament:

In an effort to reduce paper waste, we will be using eBallots, posting schematics electronically, and on our hallway wall.  Make sure judges bring a charged device for scoring ballots and writing critiques. SpeechWire is not mobile friendly, so laptops and chromebooks work best.

Speakers in draw categories must have a SpeechWire account. Best practice is to come to draw with a device already logged into their previously linked account. Otherwise, they must know their account email address and password to login at the time of their draw.
