Fall MISL
General information This is a College tournament in Michigan. View manager contact information Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League Fall Tournament
October 27, 2025
Dear MISL Colleagues:
Saginaw Valley State University, in conjunction with the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League, is excited to welcome you to the 2025 Fall MISL Tournament on the beautiful campus of SVSU located in University Center, Michigan! The tournament will take place in-person on Saturday, December 6th and will be housed out of Brown Hall. Our theme this year will be “Winter Wonderland!”
During the tournament lunch break please join us for the MISL Fall Business Meeting. This is a great opportunity to meet with other coaches, learn more about MISL, and connect with a community of support excited to help your team grow and succeed.
The tournament will offer all 11 NFA and AFA Individual Events. In addition, we will be running Impromptu Sales Speaking (contingent upon entries). Entry deadline is Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, by 5:00 pm. All entries should be made through the tournament registration page at Speechwire.com.
Quadrathon will count as a slot in the calculation of fees to offset the cost of awards. Please designate student entries in Quadrathon by selecting the appropriate event on SpeechWire. Remember, to qualify for Quadrathon, a student must be entered in at least four events, with one from each genre of competition (oral interpretation, public address, and limited preparation). In the case there are less than three entries in Quadrathon, students entered in all 3 genres will be considered for this award.
This tournament will be scored and scheduled in accordance with the MISL Bylaws for two-prelim round competitions. Tournament details and the most current MISL Bylaws are attached to this email. If you have any questions or concerns about the tournament or planning for travel, please reach out at your convenience to Ryan Rigda at rsrigda@svsu.edu or 989.737.6362. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely, Dr. Ryan Rigda Tournament Host MISL Director of Individual Events
Dr. Amy Pierce Tournament Host
Carole Bennett Executive Director of MISL
Tentative Tournament Schedule 2025 MISL Fall Invitational
Entries
An individual student may compete in no more than three (3) events per grouping. Two duos count as two events in the pattern. Entry deadline is Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, by 5:00 pm. Please register your students at the Fall MISL page on Speechwire.com.
Judges
Please remember, judges must possess a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent or have completed four (4) years of collegiate competition. Schools with 25 or more entries shall be required to cover seventy-five percent (75%) of their entry with “clean” judges. One judge will cover six IE entries. If your school needs to hire a clean judge at $25 per round ($150/day) to meet MISL bylaws, please e-mail Ryan Rigda (rsrigda@svsu.edu) as soon as possible. We will put you in contact with some folks you can hire and pay directly if necessary, or add any fees to your invoice.
Fees
$10.00 for each I.E. slot $15.00 for each uncovered I.E. slot $15.00 per drop prior to registration/$25.00 per dropped judge $25.00 per drop at registration (slots and judges) $30.00 for M.I.S.L. school fees (annual dues)
Awards
Awards will be presented to: a. The top six (6) speakers in each IE event. b. The top novice in each event c. The top community college competitor in each event. d. The top three (3) schools in sweepstakes. e. The community college finishing highest in sweepstakes. f. The top three contestants in Quadrathon will receive awards. To qualify a student must be entered in at least four events, one of each genre (oral interpretation, limited preparation, and public address). Impromptu Sales Speaking does not count for Quadrathon or for Team Sweepstakes. If the student is entered in more than four events, only the top score in each genre and the student’s next top scoring event will be used in determining results. Tabulation of points will be identical to the tabulation of team sweepstakes, with preliminary points halved and added to final round total. A Quadrathon entry will count as a slot in calculation of fees.
Impromptu Sales Speaking
Students will receive a random object in a bag. They then have a total of seven minutes to prepare and perform a sales speech designed to sell that object. Preparation and delivery is divided at the student’s discretion. The judge should provide verbal and visual time signals. Students are encouraged to be creative and flexible! They are welcome to provide a humorous, serious, or satiric sales pitch. Judges should focus on organization, uses of the object, creativity, and general delivery skills. Ask yourself: did the student successfully sell this object?
