Greetings Coaches,

 

It is exciting to invite you to the Lincoln Jr High Tourney! I appreciate your patience in the receipt of this invite. And thank you in advance for your participation and patience on the day of.

 

REGISTER - Please mark your school as attending or not by Friday, October 24th to help us plan. Final entries are due on Tuesday, October 28th at 6pm.  You may make changes to your entries on your own until this date.  After this date, you will need to email Trevor Pletcher at tpletcher1@plymouth.k12.in.us. Please include as much information/detail as possible (student name, coach name, school name, event, etc.).

 

PARKING - Buses drop off and park at door 12 on the south side of the building. Cars please park outside door 15. (map will be attached) 

 

AWARDS - Single ribbons will be awarded to the top six places in each event. Team Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top three schools in Speech and the top three schools in Debate. LJH, the host, will not participate in Team Sweepstakes.

 

DOUBLING - Those students entered in MS Debate or World Schools may double in a speech event that is not: Broadcasting, Extemp, or Discussion. There is also no doubling across Broadcasting, Extemp, or Discussion. No student may participate in more than two events.  No speaker may enter both duo events. Materials and scripts may not be used in multiple events by the same competitor.  

 

CAPS - Entries are due on Tuesday, October 28, at 6:00 pm. Each team is permitted 6 entries per event.  Each team is also limited to a maximum of 40 entries overall.

 

JUDGES - Each school is responsible for bringing one judge for every five speech entries or fraction thereof (6 entries = 2 judges) and 1 judge for every 2 debate entries. We will score online through SpeechWire. Judging on a mobile device, while possible, can be frustrating and  is not recommended. Laptops are preferred for scoring. If this proves difficult please reach out.

 

HOSPITALITY - We will be offering food from the start of registration through the end of the tournament. 

 

CONCESSIONS -  Cash-only concessions will be available all day. We appreciate the patronage of purchasing food at the tournament, as it helps to counter-act the costs of hosting.

 

MORNING OF TOURNAMENT -- On the day of the tournament, coaches should text Trevor Pletcher at (574) 341-0818 by 7:00 a.m. EST to tell of any drops. Teams are asked to arrive no later than 8 a.m.  There will be a judges' meeting at 8:30 a.m.  Extemp Draw/Prep and Radio Commercial Prep will gather at 8:25am for prep to start on time at 8:30am.

DEBATE Resolution - NEW for November

Every citizen has a moral responsibility to vote.

 

DISCUSSION - Student Life

A student may have one page, front and back, outline (not paragraph) for EACH OF THE FOUR questions. 

Round 1: How do you think your learning experience would be different if your school didn’t offer grades? 

Round 2: Should schools be allowed to monitor students' online activity, even if it's outside of school hours?

Round 3: What role does popularity play in how students are treated? Should popularity be something students aim for?

Final Round: Are competitive activities (like sports or debate) more socially valued than non-competitive ones (like art club or book club)? What message does that send to students?

 

WORLD SCHOOLS - NEW for November

This house believes that nations should institute mandatory public service.

RADIO BROADCASTING - all competitors need to be prepared to write a 1 minute commercial using a 30 minute prep period for round one; read from a provided 1 minute editorial for round two; and bring a prepared 2 minute newscast for round three. The final round will also utilize the 2 minute newscast.

EXTEMP - During prep time 1 printed article per topic will be provided. A Chromebook computer with internet access will also be provided to each competitor to aid in the research and preparation of their drawn question.
