Saturday Announcements

Good evening/morning,

Thank you to everyone who picked up ballots and made sure to provide excellent feedback on day 1. Below are some important announcements for Saturday. If there is an announcement I have not answered yet, you can email me directly.

Registration- As a reminder, registration is in Anderson Regents Room. The building will not be open until 6:45 AM so if you are here earlier than that, just know you might be in the car/outside. If you are only coming for speech events, we do not mind if you arrive later and register in the middle of Team Debate Round One.

Parliamentary Debate topic announce and prep- All of parliamentary debates will take place in EDU (Benerd School of Education) and we have assigned prep rooms for each school. They are listed below.

Drops in Speech- If you have drops in speech, please send them in ASAP as I will be entering drops tomorrow morning early before registration and during registration for team debate. There is no opening ceremony, so as you hop in the van let me know please and thank you 😊 THERE ARE JUDGE INSTRUCTIONS ON SPEECHWIRE AND WE WILL HAVE FOLKS AVAILABLE IN THE JUDGE LOUNGE TO HELP OUT NEW JUDGES SO PLEASE BE IN ATTENDANCE AT 7:45 AM IN ANDERSON PRESIDENTS IF YOU WOULD LIKE THAT INFORMATION (there will also be coffee and cake)

Being on time- Debaters should hustle to their rounds as soon as they see pairings. If you have not subscribed to the tournament or entered your students’ emails, they should try to do this in the morning. They can literally subscribe to themselves and judges can subscribe to themselves as well if they have trouble finding information. IF DEBATERS ARE 20 MINUTES LATE FROM THE TIME WE BLAST ROUNDS/ANNOUNCE TOPIC (WHICH WE ARE TRACKING) THEY WILL BE FORFEITED.

Extemp Prep- This will occur in Education 118 (Gladys L. Benerd School of Education on the map). We will do roll call but you should make sure to sign in and then head into prep

Double Entries- Students who are double entered should:

  • Go to their rooms and sign themselves in on a white board or chalk board first before heading to the next round so the judge knows you are double entered (I.E. AI02- Steve Farias (DE-Extemp)

  • Go to Extemp first if you are double entered in Extemp

  • If not in Extemp, go to event you are listed in first before going to second or third event (I.E.- AI02- Steve Farias will sign in at Impromptu as 6th Speaker, HI as 4th Speaker, and then go to Informative as 1st Speaker)

Judging- Please make sure your judges are familiar with the information provided on how to access their ballot and also take time to review the event one-sheets on Important Info and Links

Podcasting- Please bring in a usb or send a link to download the audio for the event. That way we can get our judges the information and judge throughout the weekend.

Lunch- Finally, your students will have lunch tickets and judges and coaches will have a catered lunch on Knowles Lawn. The lunch will start at 11:45 and end at 1:15 PM.

Thank you all for a great day 1 and we hope to have another great day 2!

The tournament is roughly 10 minutes behind so speech rounds will start at 9:45am. Thank you!
Extempt and Impromptu topics will be delivered to your room!

Day 1 Information

We are excited to host you once again for what we hope will be an excellent tournament for you and your students. We have over 280 students, 90 judges, and even spectators from 32 high schools. Our hope is to provide you and your participants with an excellent tournament experience.  Thank you! With that said, please read the following information so you and your participants are aware of some updates and information to help your weekend go smoothly!

1.       Schedule-
Please reference the updated schedule. We have removed the mandatory welcome ceremonies early on Friday and Saturday. We will have time for briefing judges before each event so please have your judges in our judge lounge (Anderson Regents). We will have refreshments all weekend there for your judges and will also have helpers there to help judges navigate speechwire if they are new. The registration window will be a bit longer to accommodate schools who are coming up a bit later or cannot make the welcome ceremony. Hopefully this reduces the stress on your team.

2.       Registration and Parking Lot-
Registration is in Anderson Regent’s Room this year and the judge’s lounge is next door in Anderson President’s. Public Safety has suspended parking tickets in B parking spaces (you will see the B in the lot area) on Friday for the tournament and then all lots on Saturday.

If you want to be safe the University has switched to the Park Mobile app available in all lots. If you are trying to park close to registration, my advice would be to park in Parking Lot 4, 6, 20, 32, or behind the fraternities and sororities in Lot 24. You can access this via the campus map on the tournament document. You can also put the lots into google maps and it will direct you.

3.       Payment-

Invoices are being emailed out Thursday afternoon. If you would like to pay via credit card, the link has been updated on the google doc & speechwire. You can also pay via check or cash (we like this because of no fees) and if you have questions about your invoice please contact Steve at sfarias@pacific.edu

4.       Digital Tournament Access-

If you have not done so already PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEAAASSSEEE enter emails for your students. This will help them get alerts during the tournament, access their digital pairings and schematics, see changes to tournament, etc! I will be working to send activation emails/reminders consistent but the more you can do to enter your students and judges information, the better it will be for each of us ESPECIALLY SINCE ALL BALLOTS ARE DIGITAL THIS YEAR.

5.       Accessing Ballots-

Your judges will access their ballots on live.speechwire.com. If they have not used their email to access ballots on speechwire previously, they will need to

  1. Click forgot password

  2. Enter the email address affiliated with their account that was input during registration

  3. Then set up a password.

Instructions and links to this are available on the tournament google doc.

6.       Judges Lounge, Help, Etc.

This year judges will be able to congregate in the Anderson President’s Room where we will have coffee in the morning and also a help desk to assist with any questions or concerns. If you want a quite place to work, a place to sit and socialize, or just need questions answered, please go to Anderson.

7.       Internet Access

We have a dedicated network for the tournament this year and we hope this should alleviate some of the access concerns of the past. That information is available on the tournament google document but here it is if you have gotten here:

SSID: PacificSpeech&Debate

Password: #PSDS2025

8.   Lunch and Amenities-

We have a suite of amenities for you and your students this weekend:

  1. Refreshments- There will be coffee in the judges lounge and we also plan to have light snacks (first come first serve) available in on the Second Floor of WPC for students on Saturday and Sunday.

  2. Lunch- We will be providing judges with a catered lunch Saturday afternoon on Knowles lawn along with lunch for each competitor on Friday and Saturday. Your meal tickets for competitors will be given at registration and is good for lunch in the DeRosa University center. If you are interested in trying food from Stockton (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) then check the google document with a list of restaurants in the area!

  3. Pacific Swag- Competitors will be given stickers, t-shirts, and information about Pacific Forensics along with opportunities to explore the campus. Tours will be available for students and parents (when they aren’t competing or judging)

    1. Friday at 4:00 PM

    2. Saturday at 10:30 AM, 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM

9.   Collapse of Events-

We collapsed the following events into one division:

  1. Congress

  2. Declamation

  3. Dramatic Interpretation

  4. Extemporaneous Speaking

  5. Humorous Interpretation

  6. Lincoln Douglas Debate

  7. Original Prose Poetry

  8. Parliamentary Debate

  9. Program Oral Interpreation

In every collapsed division of an event, we will either recognize the top not advancing novices OR host a breakout final round for novices that will also count towards sweepstake points. We want to reward your students hard work, recognize the best performances, AND provide an opportunity for to earn bids to the NIETOC.

10.   Judging Commitments-

We understand that many of you may still need to change entries, commitments, etc. but please understand that based on entries and also other information, we made accommodations to hire alumni, professionals, and experienced forensics competitors. With this in mind, we understand your commitment might change but knowing these changes the sooner the better to help us keep up with the tournament.

WOW that’s a lot but we appreciate you reading through it all to stay informed on the information about the tournament. If a question you have is not answered here, please do not hesitate to reach out. We hope you are prepared for an excellent weekend of competition on our beautiful campus. Good luck and thank you again for supporting our tournament.
