Entry Information Please note: Swing partners MAY have different rules from SNAFU. Please see the separate invitation from the host school for details on their tournament. For SNAFU tournaments:
DEBATERS MAY ENTER ONE INDIVIDUAL EVENT IN EACH BRACKET BUT MAY NOT ENTER EXTEMP.
Nuisance Tardiness Fees Competition rounds are expected to run on time. The Tournament Director has the discretion to apply nuisance fees to a team when their competitor(s) and/or judge(s) neglect their responsibilities. Double and triple-entered competitors will be given as much time as possible to make their appointed rounds within a scheduled flight pattern.
Qualification Entry Drops Schools will not be charged drop fees for dropping a slot between tournaments during a swing if the slot earned an AFA-NST qualification during the first half of the swing. These drops must be communicated to the Tournament Director ASAP following the Saturday awards assembly.
Judge Coverage When entering a tournament, schools will be expected to provide one judge for every eight individual event entries and one judge for every two debaters in an individual debate format. The obligation for judge coverage is determined as of each tournament entry deadline.
Entry Confirmation You will receive a confirmation email detailing your entry in the evening after the entry deadline or soon thereafter. Please check the entry you submitted and immediately correct any errors directly at the Speechwire website.
Novice/Varsity IPDA Definitions A novice is defined as a student in their first two semesters of debate of any format, including high school. Please make sure you enter students in the appropriate division. The Tournament Director reserves the right to collapse divisions based on entry size.
“Open Door” Policy SNAFU will use an open-door policy at its tournaments. Students should feel free to prioritize their mental health at tournaments. As such, students may leave a round at any time before, during, or after performances without penalty from judges.
Sweepstakes Points We will award sweepstakes points as follows: 6 points for 1st place, 5 points for 2nd place, 4 points for 3rd place, 3 points for 4th place, 2 points for 5th place, 1 point for 6th place, and all remaining finalist placements. For IPDA, sweepstakes points are awarded as follows: 2 points per prelim win, 4 points for reaching semifinals (if applicable), 5 points for 2nd place, and 6 points for 1st place. Please note: Novice divisions/breakout rounds in IE or IPDA do NOT count towards sweepstakes.
Competition and Awards 1. SNAFU tournaments will offer two rounds of preliminary competition and a final round (except in the case of single-section events). 2. Any event with more than 50 entries competing in both preliminary rounds will feature a semifinal round. 3. We will offer an award for the top six entries in each individual event (two awards for duos). 4. The top three individual sweeps winners will each receive an award (students must be entered in four events to be eligible). 5. The top three schools will each receive an award. 6. We will use AFA-style rules in tabulation. 7. For IPDA, we will offer 3 or 4 preliminary rounds with the appropriate number of outrounds. Both finalists will receive an award.
