Welcome to the Ben Davis Novice Tournament.  We hope this will be an educational and rewarding experience for your novice debaters.

 

Registration Deadline- via Speechwire by Thursday, September 18 at 5 pm EST.

Drops Deadline- Friday, September 19, at 5 pm EST  via Speechwire or email fred.douse@wayne.k12.in.us, tournament manager.

 

Directions and Parking- Ben Davis HS is located at 1200 N. Girls School Road. Please park at the north end of the building and enter through Door 20 (C-Hall). Proceed straight into the cafeteria area. Doors open at 8am EST. Restrooms are located at that entrance and at the end of that hallway.

 

This is a 3-round novice debate meet. We define a novice as a first-year student with no high school debate experience. Questions- email tournament host:  gary.peters@wayne.k12.in.us

 

The September debate topics are as follows:

 

Lincoln-Douglas Debate- Resolved: In the US criminal justice system, plea bargaining is just.

 

Public Forum- Resolved: The United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union.

 

Big Question- Resolved: Religious belief is a prerequisite for morality.

 

Policy- Resolved: The US federal government should significantly increase its exploration and/or development of the Artic.

 

Congress- The following bills are:

1.           A Bill to Allow Emotional Pets in Schools

2.           A Bill to Invest in Haiti’s Infrastructure

3.           A Bill to Allocate Organic Farming Subsidies to Smaller Farms

Judge ratio - Schools will need 1 judge per 2 entries or fraction thereof in LD, PF, BQ, and policy combinations and for congress the ratio is 1 judge per 4 entries of congress speakers. Judges will be required to judge any and all categories. Varsity student judges are permitted but must be experienced in debate and have a minimum of 200 NSDA points.

 

Concessions- We are a cashless site. Please bring plastic money for breakfast and lunch items. Money raised will offset expenses to host this and future meets.

 

Ballots- We will use e-ballots. Please have your students and judges registered in Speechwire by September 18.

Awards- Awards will be given to the top speakers. No sweepstakes.
