AI Policy at the Mile High

At the Mile High, use of AI Generative Models and Large Language Models is both discouraged and prohibited. Students who navigate to these websites during the tournament will face consequences up to and including disqualification. For example, debaters should not navigate to these websites during a debate, and Extempers should not navigate to these websites during prep time. Presenting AI work as your own is viewed as plagiarism.

Our expectation is that students have not used these websites in the creation process of their speech or performance. Navigating to AI websites during competition, even to retrieve previously searched information, is against this policy. Ultimately, this policy seeks to preserve and prioritize student critical thinking and reading comprehension in their performance.

Deadlines:

We'd encourage you to have your initial registration in by Monday, 11/3 so we can best plan to accomodate as many entries as possible. We will freeze entry fees the Friday before (11/7). Please drop any blank entries by then so we can continue to pull in entries on the waitlist.

Judges:

Please add varsity students to judge novice events on Friday.

1 judge for every 2 debate entries, 1 for every 6 speech entries

Doubling:

Students in debate events cannot do a second event that day. They can do debate one day and speech the other.

Congress students should not try to double enter on Friday

Speech students can double enter.

Novices can enter in novice rounds on Friday AND the open division on Saturday.

Address:

Hosted at Denver East High School. 1600 City Park Esplanade, Denver, CO 80206

Tab Room Access:

Curious coaches are welcome to join us in the Tab Room! We'd love to teach even more coaches how to run tab on Speechwire!

Ballot Access:

Ballots will automatically post to coach accounts as judges submit them. Please do not share results with students until after the conclusion of awards. We will post ballots to student accounts after awards have completed.

Equity Commitment:

We are committed to extending the joy of speech and debate to all students and programs, regardless of circumstances. If elements of our invitation pose a barrier to your participation please send us an email so we can help resolve the issue. We all get better when we all compete together.

FROM OUR EMAILS - IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Food Drive:

Given the recent pause in SNAP benefits, we are partnering with the Food Bank of the Rockies to raise supplies for those in need. A list of items the Food Bank of the Rockies is in need of is attached below. The team that raises the highest total number of items will be recognized at awards.

Accessibility:

Our building has three small stairs at the front. For those using a mobility device, please enter the building using the East entrance on Detroit street. We have an elevator in the building, and all spaces a judge may be in this weekend are accessible to mobility devices.

You’re Invited to Learn to Tab!

Want to learn how to run the tabroom at a tournament? Join us in Tab on Saturday, located in the “Social Room” on the 2nd floor for a more structured learning experience!

Schedule:

Our schedule on Friday is unique.

Novice IX, Novice USX, and Novice Policy will only receive two prelim rounds given the time constraints of those events.

All other novice events will receive three prelim rounds on Friday. Novice debate will be randomly paired in all three rounds.

Also on Friday, Congress will have two sessions. 4:30-6pm and 6:15pm-7:45pm.

There will not be an awards ceremony Friday night. The awards ceremony will be videotaped and emailed out with physical awards handed to coaches on Saturday. Teams may leave on Friday once all of their competitors have finished their rounds.

On Saturday all events will get three rounds and a final round. For speech events that are large enough we will run a “Final Round” (1st-6th) and a “Next-In Final Round” (7th-12th).
