2025 H-F VIKING HALLOWEEN CLASSIC SPEECH TOURNAMENT

 

 

Dear Fellow Speech Coaches,

 

The coaches and members of Homewood-Flossmoor High School Speech Team are pleased to invite you to our annual Viking Classic Speech Tournament on Saturday, October 25, 2025.  This tournament is for novice competitors only, although varsity members may come to support their novice teammates.  We are looking forward to hosting your team as we welcome you to an enjoyable and rewarding day!

 

Our tournament will consist of three preliminary rounds (no final round) followed by the awards assembly.  Extemp will prep once and Radio will bring a script with news no more than 24 hours old.  

 

Each school may enter three contestants in each event and a second team if space permits.  Please reach out to me if you wish to enter more than 3 per event.  We ask that you reply as soon as possible with regards to this, as requests will be granted on a first come-first served basis. We also want to invite your team of novices to experience a tournament as observers, so they are aware of how a tournament operates.  That will give them a sense of comfort when they go out to compete in the tournaments that follow. 

 

The entry fee is $150.00 per team (which will cover up to 3 entries per event)!  Schools bringing larger teams (4 or more entries per event) will be expected to pay an entry fee of $200.00 per team.  Please make checks payable to:

VIKING CLASSIC 2025 INFORMATION

 

Tournament Schedule: 

7:00am Registration

8:00am  Extemp Prep

8:30am  Round 1

10:00am Round 2

11:30am Round 3

12:00pm Lunch 

2:00pm  Awards

 

Rules: All IHSA rules will be followed for all events. 

 

Judges: Each school must furnish one (1) judge for every five (5) entries. The number of judges will be determined from your original entry. You will be responsible for covering all judging assignments regardless of drops on the day of the tournament.  

 

Please bring a stopwatch in case you are assigned to judge a timed event.

 

*** It is imperative that judges are critical yet compassionate in their critiques. Oral critiques are not to be given after the performance or at the conclusion of the round.  In addition, please attempt to adhere to the speaking schedule as it is establishes the expectation for the rest of the season.

 

Awards: The top six (6) competitors will receive ribbons.  We will not break any ties.  The top five (5) schools will be announced and will receive a Halloween treat!  The three (3) schools with the highest cumulative scores will also receive team trophies.

 

Meals: Concessions will be provided at the tournament during breakfast and lunch.  Breakfast items will include donuts, muffins, juice and milk while lunch items will include pizza, chips, other delicious items as well as soda and, of course, water.  As with many schools, we use our concessions as a fundraiser and would greatly appreciate your support. 

 

 

Event Prep and Information: 

 

Extemp - There will be one 30-minute prep period will begin before Round 1.  Competitors will use the same script for all three rounds.

 

Radio – Competitors will prepare their script at home, with news no more than 24 hours old, with a commercial.  

 

Time - Time will be provided for informational purposes only for ALL events.  There will be NO time violations in any event.  

 

 

Confirmation - When we receive your registration, you will receive verification.  Please confirm your event totals by using SpeechWire.
