MISL Novice-ish** Virtual Workshop and Tournament

OCC and the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League would like to invite you to our FREE VIRTUAL MISL Novice-ish** Tournament and Workshop on Saturday, September 27th from 9:30 AM to 4:15 PM.  Novices or “novices in an event/genre” are encouraged to join us!

**ELIGIBILITY for the MISL Mini: Anyone who is an undergraduate (has not received a BA or a BS degree) can compete. We are attempting to make this a ‘newer’ student tournament. So, while your students do not need to be novices, they should not be seasoned veterans who have mastered the event. However, if you have an interpretation student who hasn’t tried impromptu yet, have them try it here! If you have a second-year student or a varsity member who has never tried a limited prep event, then this may be the time!  (This might include a student who is still a novice or who has competed in an event and has not yet made it to a final round.)

The day is split into two sections.  In the morning, we’ll offer a tournament that includes five events: Informative, Persuasion, Impromptu, Prose, and Dramatic Interpretation rounds.  In the afternoon, students are welcome to participate in interactive workshops.  We have also included some instructional overview videos. (Linked below)  These videos will help students to understand the three main types of events: public address, limit preparation, and interpretation. Students are encouraged to watch the videos prior to participating in the workshops, but watching the videos is not necessary for participation.

Our tournament will be hosted using Zoom and SpeechWire.com. Students and judges MUST register with SpeechWire.com to participate. Because this event is free, there are some limitations.

Michigan schools need a clean judge for each 6 entries.  Students should enter no more than 3 events.

The first three Non-Michigan schools are also welcome to join us with up to three total entries, and the following parameters apply:

The first entry is free, and no judge is needed!

If two entries are made, a judge is needed for ONE round

If 3 entries are made, a judge is needed for TWO rounds.

All students competing in the novice-ish competition must attend all three competition rounds on Saturday, September 27th.

Competing students are encouraged to join the workshops.  Spectators (prospective students, family, educators) are welcome to attend all or any part of the day. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.

We look forward to seeing you!
