Debate Broward Novice Champs is for first year high school speech and debate competitors.

Spectators and observers are prohibited.

There is no entry fee for traditional BCPS students to participate.

*Private and Charter Schools must pay a $100.00 team entry fee.

Parking:

The main parking lot is located in front of the school and serves as the primary parking area. Additional parking spaces are available in the north lot, as well as outside the main gate near the fence at the front of the school. Individuals who choose to park in the north parking lot should enter the school through the side gate located near the bike rack.

 

Security:

Students need to wear their school IDs and follow all rules/procedures laid out by the Broward County Code of Conduct. Everyone can enter through the cafeteria doors facing the parking lot unless otherwise instructed.

 

Competitor & Judge Drops/Edits:

  • Speechwire will remain open for coaches to drop competitors, edit competitor names, and drop/edit/add judges.
  • Any entries over that number will go on the waitlist, which will be cleared pending available space at Millennium and sufficient judge numbers.
  • No double or cross entries are allowed.

 

Deadlines:

  • Congress Legislation Submission: Due WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1st
    • Any novice competitor wishing to research, write, and submit legislation for consideration should have their coach review the legislation first.
    • The coach should email it in a Word file to sarah.beauchamp@browardschools.com by 04/01/26.
    • All legislation must follow the NSDA guidelines and format structure.
  • Lunch Pizza Pie Pre-Orders will close on MONDAY, APRIL 6th
    • Pre-Order pizza pies for student lunch is $20 per every 6 kids (1 box of pizza and 6 waters…2 slices of pizza and 1 water per kid).
    • You must pre-order pizza to ensure your students have lunch.
    • NO OUTSIDE FOOD DELIVERIES (DoorDash/UberEats).
    • Concession prices vary due to the concessions being a fundraiser for the host school’s program.
    • We will not hold the tournament rounds from starting if the concession lines are long.
    • Add pre-ordered pizza pies by clicking “Tournament home” on the left column, then click “Update your meal order” in the middle of the screen.
    • Print your final invoice to request a check from your school under “Current Invoice” on the left column of Speechwire. Make school check or money order payable to “Millennium Debate”. Cash is also accepted.
  • Registration for NEW ENTRIES will close on MONDAY, APRIL 6th
    • At that time, we will begin releasing competitors off the waitlist if team judge numbers and room space allow.
    • Competitor changes (drops or name changes only) and judge drops/name changes/adds can be made until the day of the tournament.
    • ***NO LATE ADDS. Do not bring competitors who are not registered to the tournament.***

 

 

Arrival: 7:30am – 8am

Procedures:

Upon entering the school, students will be escorted directly to the cafeteria. Judges and coaches will proceed to the media center for their check-in.

 

Coaches and Judges Check in:

  • All coaches, competitors, and judges MUST arrive AND check-in for the tournament between 7:30 am and 8:00 am.
  • Extemp. Draw is 7:50am. Room 206.
  • Judge Lounge is the library/media center.
  • Please DO NOT bring students who are not registered.
  • Please understand we will NOT move a student from one event to another.

Students:

  • Please make sure that your students are wearing their IDs for the entire tournament.
  • Please make sure that your competitors and varsity judges have set-up and secured rides home prior to the end of the tournament.
  • Competitor lounge is the cafeteria. Coaches are responsible for making sure their team’s area is cleaned up.

*If you or your students arrive after 8:00 am you will run the risk of being dropped from the tournament!

 

IMPORTANT PROCEDURES FOR COACHES:

  • Coaches must accompany their students to the tournament or designate a proxy BCPS teacher or coach. Notify district staff prior to the tournament.
  • Coaches must have hard copies of the field trip forms with them in case of an emergency. Coaches should not be leaving campus with students without permission forms. Having access to their information online will not work when Wi-Fi is slow or there is no service.
  • If there is a student who may need medicine at a tournament, coaches must let district staff know. We need to be aware of who needs medicine and who has it in case there is an emergency.
  • Coaches should assist your competitors in finding their rooms on schematics when each round is released.
  • No outside food deliveries.

 

Judges:

Check-in is 7:30am – 8am in the Library/Media Center. Please double and triple confirm with your judges! If your judges are a no show then coaches will be used. Judges are obligated for the entire tournament.

  • Judges are required for any tournament to run and schools are required to cover their entries. (1 judge covers 2 debate entries, or 1 judge covers any combination of 5 speech/congress entries.)
  • Please make sure you do not bring more students than you have judges to cover. Reach out to competitors' family members, teachers, and mentors for judge help. Coaches can judge too.
  • Novice coaches (0-3yrs) are required to judge at least one round.
  • It is the coaches' responsibility to train their judges.
  • It is not appropriate for judges to include their contact information of any kind, including social media on their ballot feedback.
  • "Adult Judges" must be over 18yrs, out of high school, and speak English. All adult judges should be a registered BCPS volunteer at https://apps.raptortech.com/Apply/NDgyMDplbi1VUw==
  • First-time judge:  You should have received an email from Speechwire to follow and create an account.
  • Judged before:  It is important tmake sure you have logged into live.speechwire.com and are able to sign in with the same email address you used previously. Once signed in, please make sure the cell number is correct/added to your account.
  • All judges need to arrive on time, have checked-in, and have logged into live.speechwire.com prior to coming to the tournament. If for whatever reason you cannot initially log in, click "Forgot Password" but use the same email you entered.
  • Electronic Device: All ballots are electronic, so judges will need to bring a working, charged, smart phone, tablet, or laptop (preferably with a keyboard) to complete the eballots.
  • Available in “Files for Download” section of Speechwire: Judge Cheat Sheet, BCPS Guest Wifi Instructions, and Speechwire Eballot instructions.

Judge During Round:

  • Click "Start Round" after they confirm the correct competitors are in the room with them.
  • Type comments while students are speaking, which will expedite the tournament. Comments are open for editing overnight, but results must be submitted asap.
  • Save/submit ranks, points, and decisions when the round is finished. Do not disclose. We cannot move on to the next round or close the tournament until all ballots are submitted.
  • The “Comments” section will be open to add/edit comments the rest of the day, but scores will be locked.

Varsity Judges:

  • Varsity debaters with at least 150 NSDA points, currently enrolled and competing in debate, and who are not in their first year of high school debate are welcome to attend and judge.
  • Proof of NSDA record is required.
  • If you have varsity debaters who can judge and/or P.O. for Congressional Debate, please email sarah.beauchamp@browardschools.com directly with their names and put it into the notes section of the judge. We will take P.O. nominations first for novice P.O.s.
  • Varsity judges need to stay in the judge lounge and remain logged into live.speechwire.com. We have had issues with varsity judges who leave to go see novices then receive a ballot and cannot be located.

 

Tournament Logistics:

Events: Any event(s) that have too few entries to run, will be collapsed or combined with another event.

  • All speech events, BQ, PF, LD: 5 rounds
  • Congress (CD): 3 sessions
  • Policy Debate (CX): This event is not offered at this tournament.

  • Congress:
    • Novices are P.O.ing themselves, so please make sure that your novices have been properly trained. Please see the P.O. overview for assistance located in the “Files for Download” and Canvas Coach Corner.
    • The Champs legislation packet will be posted by Friday, 04/03/26 in the “Files for Download” section of Speechwire. 3 pieces of legislation per session.
  • Extemp: Prep Room – 206
    • Competitors move to the Extemp. Prep. Room 206  at 7:50am for round one draw.
    • Competitors return to the Extemp. Prep. Room 206 after they speak each round.
    • Students may use the provided index card (they may not use their own or paper) during their speech, but should not be reading directly from it.
    • Students must remain in Room 206 for prep. They are not allowed to draw and go prepare anywhere else.

    • 5th Rd - Celebrating the U.S.: 1776 to Today (past historical events and amendments relating to today)
  • Public Forum Debate – 2026 NSDA April Topic:
    • Resolved: "The United States should eliminate the President’s authority to deploy military forces abroad without Congressional approval."
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debate – 2026 March/April Topic:
    • Resolved: "The United States military out to abide by the principle of non-intervention."
  • Big Questions (BQ) Debate – 2025/2026 Topic: (NSDA Wording Updated October 2025)
    • "Resolved: Moral systems rooted in theism are preferable to non-theistic moral systems."
  • Policy: Policy debate is not offered at this tournament.
  • Impromptu – Released at the tournament
  • Piece Registration for Interpretation (DI, DUO, HI, POI): Once you have updated your entries, go to the left column on Speechwire called “Piece Registration”. For each INTERP entry, you are required to include the Entry Title in the “title” section and the website or ISBN number in the “author” section.

Awards Presentation:

  • Top 6 competitors in each event will receive a trophy.
